The community is home to a selection of condominiums and apartment buildings, from low-rise brick complexes with park views to mid-20th century high-rises that feature beautiful panoramas of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. Historic schools in South Commons
Children in South Commons may attend Drake Elementary. The school has a C rating from Niche and serves students from kindergarten through grade eight. From there, pupils move on to Phillips Academy High, also has a C-minus rating and an 18-1 student-teacher ratio. The school provides its students with a wide range of unique course offerings, including digital media, improv comedy and forensic science.
South Commons students may attend Phillips Academy High School, named after Wendell Phillips.

Green spaces and sandy beaches
Dunbar Park encompasses nearly half of the South Commons neighborhood. The park features an array of sports fields, tennis courts, a 7-lane running track and a batting cage. The green space also offers a playground and splash pad for kids and a reading garden for bookworms. Margaret T. Burroughs Beach is located 1 mile east. It’s a favorite place for locals to sunbathe or splash in the waters of Lake Michigan. The sandy strip treats beachgoers to stunning views of the Chicago skyline. Just south of the beach, the 31st Street Harbor offers 1,000 slips for private boats and a public fishing dock. Adjacent to the harbor, a large playground features an array of climbing structures and twisty slides. In the mood for a stroll? Walk part — or all — of the Lakefront Trail that runs 18 miles along the Great Lake’s beautiful shoreline.
When the weather isn’t complying, or it’s time for educational fun, the Field Museum is just 3 miles away. It is considered one of the world’s best natural history museums. Good eats and great music
Head down to nearby Grant Park in September for the annual Taste of Chicago. The world’s largest food festival brings together the city’s best eateries. The free-admission event features over 35 food vendors and live music and entertainment on multiple stages.
Getting in and around the town
Whether commuting to work or just heading intown to explore the city, Interstate 90 and Highway 41 are both easily accessible for the quick, 4-mile drive to downtown Chicago.
