A community close to the Metra with tons of restaurants to explore
At the turn of the 20th century, South Loop began to grow as a network of railroad yards that served both freight and passenger trains. The railroad and printing industries began to die down during the 1950s and 1960s, which left much of South Loop vacant, leading to city renewal efforts in the 1980s. Today, the community is home to a robust restaurant scene, staple attractions like Grant Park, easy access to public transportation and a residential feel not commonly found in downtown neighborhoods of major cities. “Living in downtown Chicago is like living in New York City with the taxis and only high-rise buildings,” explains Stephanie Mason, a real estate manager with 5th Group Realty & Management who grew up in the neighborhood. “In South Loop, residents still get that feeling of luxury, but with more boutiques, restaurants and a stronger local vibe.”

Corner store breakfasts and Chinatown dinners
Residents are within walking distance of the neighborhood’s diverse culinary scene, including AO Hawaiian Hideout, which is appreciated for its colorful interior and Asian-inspired dishes. On the west side is Chinatown, where eateries like Qing Xiang Yuan Dumplings, Shoo Loong Kan Hotpot, and several others sit along South Wentworth Avenue. A sense of community can be felt perusing the shelves of the family-owned Sandmeyer’s Bookstore, picking up lunch from delis in corner bodegas like the South Loop Market or grabbing a drink with friends at Reggies Chicago, a popular spot with a casual and feel pub-style food. “Lots of people that bought townhomes filled the bottom floor with delis and boutiques, so they are passionate about serving the community,” explains Mason, compared to businesses located just north of downtown. Grocery stores like Trader Joe’s and Jewel-Osco are conveniently dotted throughout the community. At the same time, retailers like Target, H&M, Old Navy and several more reside in Roosevelt Collection Shops in the northwest corner.

Warm days at Grant Park
Grant Park has visitors year-round, but locals and tourists flock during the warmer months. “Nothing says Chicago like Grant Park,” says Mason. “I grew up going there with my grandma and seeing all of the tulips. When those start to bloom, that’s when the parks start getting busy, food trucks appear, and events start happening.” Many head here for walks along Lakefront Trail or to meet up with friends for a picnic. It is also home to Museum Campus, where visitors can tour Chicago’s three largest museums. Dog owners take their dogs to Anderson (Fred) Park to get some exercise at the off-leash site, while comedy shows, concerts and theater performances can be enjoyed at the Arie Crown Theater.

The condos of South Loop
The streets of South Loop are filled with bike lanes, street lights and wide sidewalks, making getting around the neighborhood convenient. Despite the absence of green spaces, green ash trees are spread across each avenue alongside parked cars, which line the community. Morning strolls showcase late 19th and early 20th-century industrial buildings turned condos alongside a spattering of high-rise condominium buildings constructed in the early 2000s. And despite the modern flair of many, roughly half feature brick-clad exteriors and large windows, a style synonymous with Chicago. Those looking to purchase a home in South Loop can expect a price range from $200,000 to $500,000 depending on size and condition, while penthouses and corner designated units can reach up to $800,000.

Roosevelt Station
Aside from the Loop itself, South Loop is the most well-connected Chicago neighborhood. Roosevelt Station offers residents access to every other part of the city, including Chicago O’Hare International Airport, an hour-long ride on the red and blue lines. Those driving can reach their flight at the airport along a 17.4-mile drive west via Interstate 90 and the John H. Stronger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County off West Odgen Avenue in 3.3 miles. Meanwhile, the campuses of Columbia College of Chicago and Illinois John Marshall Law School, which account for the community’s younger population, are located in the neighborhood.

Game day traffic
Considering that game days at Soldier Field and grand conventions at McCormick Place both happen within the community, traffic is expected in South Loop, particularly on the east side. Though this influx of traffic occurs periodically, it may be worth considering for those who are looking to move into the community.
McCormick Place has 2.6 million square feet of convention center space.
