Housing prices can vary quite a bit
At the heart of this community is the 434-unit Trumbull Park Homes public housing development, which dates back to 1938 but was renovated in the 2000s. Tenant income limits are based on the area’s median income. The streets around Trumbull Park Homes include quaint bungalows, ranch-style houses and Georgian-style options, some of them over 100 years old. “The neighborhood got really popular during the industrial era when we were making steel in the area,” says local broker Lisa Foster, who’s with @Properties and has 25 years of real estate experience. “It got popular because people wanted to live close to where they worked.” The now-defunct South Works steel mill was about 4 miles from Trumbull Park and employed thousands.
The homes line streets with tree-shaded sidewalks, and floor plans average about 1,200 square feet. Houses in need of repair typically start around $60,000, while renovated properties may reach the low $300,000s.
Schools offer activities focused on students’ interests
Kids in the area can enter the massive Chicago Public Schools system, one of the largest in the country. Families may explore magnet schools, open enrollment schools and specialty programs outside their attendance zone. Admission usually hinges on space and a lottery. The neighborhood is zoned for schools including Orville T. Bright Elementary School, which is right beside Trumbull Park Homes and covers prekindergarten through eighth grade. Student activities include drawing and choir. The area’s George Washington High School has career and technical education programs in game design and culinary arts.

Locals enjoy the namesake park and scenic spots along the coast
Trumbull Park itself stretches 18 acres and is a short stroll for many. “People like going there,” Foster says. “That’s where a lot of people do their recreation. I even went over there as a young child myself.” The park has a playground, four ball diamonds, basketball and tennis courts, and a pool that’s open in the summer. It’s also home to the Trumbull Fieldhouse, where you can throw some punches in the boxing center or take a weight training class. With the Lake Michigan coast just about 3 miles from Trumbull Park, Calumet Beach is the place to go on a warm, sunny day, or to Calumet Park for walks by the water. The Marian R. Byrnes Natural Area is nearby as well, for nature walks and wildlife sightings.
