Laidback suburban atmosphere and longtime residents
Washington Heights is about 30 miles south of Chicago, known for a settled atmosphere, rather than a lifestyle of constant redevelopment. “It’s an established community,” says Muriel Carter, a real estate agent with Century 21. “That’s what draws people in.” Residents form block clubs to maintain green spaces, volunteer at local events and establish bonds. Realtors will also point out the importance of the small business community in keeping Washington Heights together. “There’s a strong Hispanic presence, which gets expressed in a lot of Mexican restaurants and grocery stores,” says Realtor Brandon Rodriguez, who’s with Corona Homes Team and has family who grew up in the neighborhood. Overall, Washington Heights is a former manufacturing center with longtime residents who stayed on to beautify the quiet residential stretches.

Brick bungalows in abundance
Bungalows are a prime feature of this neighborhood, and they come in a variety of brick colors – tan, off white and classic red. These are typically set close together, forming a cohesive aesthetic along streets lined with sidewalks. Front lawns are primarily ornamental, with small shrubs hugging the stoops. Other local styles are complimentary to this preponderance of bungalows. Homebuyers can look for raised ranches and rehabbed Georgians. Prices range from $160,000 to $370,000.
