Laidback suburban atmosphere and longtime residents

Washington Heights is about 30 miles south of Chicago, known for a settled atmosphere, rather than a lifestyle of constant redevelopment. “It’s an established community,” says Muriel Carter, a real estate agent with Century 21. “That’s what draws people in.” Residents form block clubs to maintain green spaces, volunteer at local events and establish bonds. Realtors will also point out the importance of the small business community in keeping Washington Heights together. “There’s a strong Hispanic presence, which gets expressed in a lot of Mexican restaurants and grocery stores,” says Realtor Brandon Rodriguez, who’s with Corona Homes Team and has family who grew up in the neighborhood. Overall, Washington Heights is a former manufacturing center with longtime residents who stayed on to beautify the quiet residential stretches.

Brick bungalows in abundance

Bungalows are a prime feature of this neighborhood, and they come in a variety of brick colors – tan, off white and classic red. These are typically set close together, forming a cohesive aesthetic along streets lined with sidewalks. Front lawns are primarily ornamental, with small shrubs hugging the stoops. Other local styles are complimentary to this preponderance of bungalows. Homebuyers can look for raised ranches and rehabbed Georgians. Prices range from $160,000 to $370,000.

Train stations at 95th Street and 103rd Street

Washington Heights features two train stations: one at 95th Street next to Oakdale Park, and one at 103rd Street next to Interstate 57. Buses are available along 95th Street and 103rd Street for those traveling in an east-west direction, while Vincennes Avenue and Halstead Street have buses traveling in a north-south direction. The bungalow-centric neighborhoods are welcoming to pedestrians, thanks to sidewalks being the norm here.

Nightlife fun at Cork and Kerry

Local takeout eateries typically offer pizza, chicken or fish. For a sit-down meal, there are Italian, Jamaican, Mexican and seafood spots. Nightlife entertainment is available at Bar 91 on Ashland Avenue, and it features regular events like Soul’d Out Saturdays, NFL Sundays and karaoke night on Tuesdays. Cork and Kerry is another option for sports bar fans. For live musical performances by local rock bands and blues musicians, residents head to Harte’s Saloon, which has a colorful dive bar atmosphere. Realtors note that nearby Beverly is another place residents travel to for dining. “They have theaters, dancing and some great restaurants,” says Carter.
