Mix of century-old homes and new construction
Houses in West Humboldt Park sit mere feet from the roadways where many people opt to park their cars after a day at work. Early 1900s Bungalows, minimal traditional homes and brick two-flats sit side-by-side and often feature small, gated gardens. New traditional homes with black paned windows have also developed in the last few years, infusing a modern, industrial look as the neighborhood grows and evolves. Front stoops lead to sidewalks shaded by old-growth trees. Homes needing major repairs sell for $69,000 to $160,000, though most properties are listed between $200,000 to $410,000. Multi-family units with six to eight bedrooms are priced between $420,000 and $488,000.Exploring exhibits at The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture
While the neighborhood has several pocket parks with playgrounds, including Kevdale and Garfield, the area’s recreational hub sits just 2 miles east. Humboldt Park spans nearly 200 acres and has been a longstanding staple in Chicago. The park's centerpiece is a historic 1920s field house with Tudor and Georgian features. Situated along a small lagoon, the field house has a fitness center, two gyms and event space. On the other side of the waterway is Chicago’s only inland beach where locals can lay out and soak up some sun or go for a swim. “You’ll also see some ducks wandering by or wading in the lagoon,” Wyatt says. Horse stables built in the late 19th century have since been transformed into The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, the only one of its kind in the country. People from across the city venture to the museum within the park to browse numerous exhibits showcasing the work of Puerto Rican designers, artists and musicians. Several other amenities are dotted around the expansive green space, including soccer fields, tennis courts and a replica of the Chicago Cubs Stadium, known as “Little Cubs Field,” where recreational league games are frequently played.Dual language program at Alfred Noble Elementary
Chicago Public Schools serves students living in West Humboldt Park. For prekindergarten through eighth grades, many attend Alfred Nobel Dual Language School or Piccolo School of Excellence, each earning C ratings from Niche. There’s also C-plus-rated West Park STEAM Academy, a charter elementary school where the curriculum focuses on skills like critical thinking and collaboration. Students later filter into Orr Academy High School, which gets a D-plus rating from Niche.Culture, cuisine and carnival rides at the Puerto Rican Festival
For more than 40 years, locals living in West Humboldt Park have celebrated the Puerto Rican Festival, which includes the People’s Parade. The display spans the length of Division Street between Western and California avenues, passing under two 59-foot-tall steel Puerto Rican flags built to honor the area’s culture. The party continues in Humboldt Park, which becomes the scene for live salsa and merengue music, carnival rides and Puerto Rican food. Humboldt Park also regularly hosts events like the Latin Jazz Festival and Movies in the Park, where community members can connect.Commutes to downtown Chicago
North Avenue edges the neighborhood, linking locals to Lake Michigan, roughly 6 miles east. To reach downtown Chicago, many take Interstate 290 for 7.5 miles. There are several Chicago Transit Authority bus stops along West Division Street for those using public transportation to navigate the city. These can be useful to many residents, given that the neighborhood has no stops on the public rail line.Classic Chicago-style dogs at Jimmy's Red Hots
Longstanding staple restaurants can be found in and around the neighborhood. Jimmy’s Red Hots has been serving classic Chicago-style hot dogs for 70 years. Nearby Roeser’s Bakery opened its doors in 1911, making it the city’s oldest family-owned bakery. A quick 2.5-mile drive east along Division Street will lead to a host of eateries serving authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, including Papa’s Cache Sabroso, Janellie’s Kitchen and La Bruquena. The Buyers Flea Market is a one-stop shop for people across the city, with hundreds of vendors selling everything from clothes to action figures and power tools. The idea started with just eight vendors on the roof of a parking garage. There’s also a sizable menu to order from, including churros, tortas and tacos. For groceries, many visit the ALDI along North Kostner Avenue.Revitalization projects proposed on Chicago Avenue
West Humboldt Park is one of the 10 priority communities chosen for the first phase of Chicago’s INVEST South/West improvement strategy. Multiple projects are underway to bring more jobs and amenities to the area. Situated along North Avenue is the Pioneer Bank building, built in 1926. The city hopes to restore the space for offices, 75 residential units and a Latino cultural center. Along the neighborhood’s southern end is Chicago Avenue, the site of another proposal hoping to breathe new life into the community. “The Ave” is expected to feature an outdoor plaza, a grocery store, a daycare and a gym.
