A Chicago suburb hidden between parks and the university
While West Woodlawn is a Chicago suburb only a small section of the city, residents are never short of activity and amenities. “It’s just a melting pot with a diversity of lifestyle and people,” says Realtor Melinda Jordan with Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty. “Because the University of Chicago’s campus is an anchor within the neighborhood, you get the benefit of the diverse student population and access to the hospital. Also, Hyde Park and South Shore are hubs for the community.” Throughout West Woodlawn, Blacks in Green (BIG) works to improve sustainability and green spaces while maintaining its historical sites. One of these is the Emmett and Mamie Till-Mobley House Museum, which documents Woodlawn’s foundations dating back to the Great Migration. “You’ve got a number of community organizations in Woodlawn,” Jordan says. “Residents are committed to them, and they’re just always finding ways to better it.”

Community gardens and golfing along the South Shore
While West Woodlawn feels more urban at points, BIG aims to add more trees, sustainable businesses and pedestrian passageways along South Saint Lawrence Avenue. Currently, residents can stop and appreciate the local flora and pops of color at Mamie and Emmett Till Memorial Garden. West Woodlawn is also just a few minutes from some of Chicago’s best parks—Washington Park and Jackson Park. Across its 345 acres, Washington Park features trails winding through wetlands and prairies and countless athletic amenities, including cricket pitches. The park is also home to the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, highlighting more African American history and culture in Chicago and Woodlawn. To the east, Jackson Park is 551 acres along the shores of Lake Michigan, where people can boat, but people also love the park for its golf course.

Italianate condos and bungalows in West Woodlawn
When living in West Woodlawn, people can find a mix of single-family homes and condos. Homes are often bungalows, while condos are brick Italianate buildings disguised as single-family homes but can house two to six individual units inside. Many streets have spots where mature trees shade the streets. Yards are encased with iron fencing, which often matches the iron detailing on front doors. “There have been tons of new construction in the area recently,” says broker Derek Walvoord with Exit Strategy Realty. “And this has led to an increase in median house prices and blurred boundary lines between West Woodlawn and the surrounding, more developed neighborhoods.” The neighborhood’s sustainability efforts extend to the housing, with Jordan highlighting that newer homes are using more sustainable building materials. Homes in Woodlawn typically list between $100,000 and $500,000, with the newer construction pricing higher.
