From French village to suburban neighborhood
In 1890, Edward Alden sold a chunk of his 600 acres in Western Massachusetts to French-Canadian carpenter Marcele Croteau, the beginning of a community Alden named after himself: Aldenville. Croteau built 30 homes, a school and a church, and French immigrants and French-speaking Canadians flocked to the Massachusetts village over the next 30 years, transforming it from scattered farms into one of the city of Chicopee’s early neighborhoods. People continue to move to the community of 6,500 people 7 miles north of Springfield. However, Aldenville is also home to families who have lived there for generations, utilizing some of the same businesses and schools today that they did 100 years ago.
The Connecticut River wraps around Aldenville and adds to its beauty.

Some walkability offered by Aldenville
Aldenville’s ranches, Cape Cods and split-level homes can be spotted among “Children at Play” signs and level quarter-acre lawns with mature maple trees. The neighborhood has some walkability thanks to the abundance of sidewalks and a collection of restaurants and parks scattered about, says Chicopee resident and Skye Mountain Realty broker Patt Gajda. Most homes are within a half mile of a green space, eatery or convenience store. Houses typically sell between $200,000 and $400,000. About a third of residents rent, and a large apartment community is off Grandy Road.
Aldenville has easy access to I-90 and 391.

St. Joan of Arc School endures since 1914
Lambert-Lavoie Memorial Elementary School near the middle of Aldenville gets a C-plus from Niche, as does Bellamy Middle School. Lambert-Lavoie Memorial Elementary encourages students to read at home with giveaways such as free tickets to see the Air Force's demonstration squadron, the Thunderbirds, perform at the Great New England Air Show.
Not long after Aldenville’s creation, St. Rose de Lima Parish was founded in 1909. Five years later, the Catholic parish opened St. Joan of Arc School, a longstanding staple in the community. It offers a private Christian education for kindergartners through eighth graders. The brick-and-column building enrolls fewer than 200 students annually, though thousands have passed through its doors over the past nine decades. “Aldenville specifically tends to attract generational families,” says lifelong resident Jennifer Picard, a Realtor with ERA M. Connie Laplante Real Estate. “St. Joan of Arc is still standing because of that family history. The residents are committed to it.”
Longtime breakfast and lunch favorites in Aldenville
Aldenville’s suburban character briefly dissipates on Montgomery Street, where McKinstry Farms has been since 1908. The farm sells sweet corn and other fresh produce at McKinstry’s Market Garden. “Every kid growing up in Aldenville goes to work picking crops for McKinstry’s,” Picard says. “It’s just that trust we establish as residents. We’ve been going there since we were born. Our grandparents and parents went there, and now we go there.” North on Montgomery Street, Al’s Diner hasn’t changed much since the ‘50s, as the stainless-steel breakfast-and-lunch joint is still cash-only. The neighborhood’s restaurants are mostly along Grattan Street, where the same family has operated the lunch counter and dining room at Lucky Strike Restaurant since the 1940s. Memorial Drive on the east side of Aldenville has supermarkets such as Big Y and big-box stores including Walmart and BJ’s.
Aldenville sits about 3 miles west of Westover Air Reserve Base, Chicopee's largest employer, with 4,000 military and civilian jobs on site. Aircraft occasionally take off and land at the inactive base, but Westover's flight patterns prevent them from flying over Chicopee neighborhoods, including Aldenville. Locals say there is minimal noise from the base.

There, kayakers and canoers can put into the water.
