College Park
Resort-like living in College Park
Homes often have Spanish and Mediterranean looks, with stucco exteriors, archways and clay roof tiles. There also are contemporary homes with traditional styling like shingle roofing. Single-family houses of 1,700 square feet to 3,000 square feet are about $650,000 to $950,000. Those 3,300 to 4,600 square feet can be from $1 million to $1.6 million."The houses are very modern, and there's a very nice community center at the heart of it all with an Olympic pool, a dog park and a 24-hour gym. It's kind of like a resort," says Vanessa O'Neill, a Realtor with Realty Masters & Associates, who has experience assisting everyone from first-time buyers to seasoned investors. College Park Community Association (CPCA) events hosted throughout the year include bingo night, casino night, winter celebrations, a fall fest, and a trunk-or-treat.
Townhouses and condos are usually less than 2,200 square feet and $500,000 to $780,000. Builds from the 2020s are mainly south of Kimble Avenue, with homeowners associations separate from CPCA and with their own amenities. Monthly HOA fees —regardless of home type — usually stay in the $200s to $300s.
Rhodes Elementary, Chino High School
Public schools include Edwin Rhodes Elementary School, which earns an A from Niche and has a student-created newspaper, The Rhodes Gazette. Magnolia Junior High School and Chino High School both receive B grades. Chino High received the 2023 College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award. After high school, graduates of Chino High may already have some college credits racked up from the dual enrollment program. Chaffey Community College, a partner with the Chino Valley Unified School District, offers six academic and career communities.
Ayala Park, Chino Creek Wetlands
Ruben S. Ayala Park is Chino's largest community park at 140 acres. It has a skate park, batting cages, sports fields and a network of trails. Events have included Bark Around Ayala Park in November with a dog fashion show and a pie-eating contest; Bike Day in May, for community rides and a bike obstacle course; and the Halloween Spooktacular, which has trunk-or-treats, hot air balloons and carnival rides. Also at the park are the Chino Valley YMCA and the Chaffey College Chino Community Center, operated through a partnership between the Chaffey Community College District and the city of Chino. The center is available for special events, meetings and parties.
The Chino Creek Wetlands and Educational Park restores native habitats and has interactive wildlife stations. The park's Water Discovery Field Trip Program provides tours and demonstrations for area students. The annual Earth Day Event in April offers animal encounters, environmental exhibits and hands-on activities. Prado Regional Park is also nearby, with golf courses and an equestrian center.
A few freeways, Omnitrans buses
There are few through streets in the College Park development, so traffic is subdued on residential streets, which have tidy sidewalks and lots of landscaping and trees. "It's a walkable neighborhood in a very convenient location," O'Neill says. "You're just a few minutes away from the 71." With freeways including state Routes 71, 83 and 60 close by, driving and carpooling are the norm. Two Park & Ride lots are within 5 miles.Omnitrans bus stops are on streets like Eucalyptus Avenue, and several routes run from the Chaffey College Transit Center. Shared, reservation-based OmniRide has some stops around Ayala Park and College Park Avenue. There also are bike lanes.
Chino Spectrum Marketplace and a food hall
It's several miles to Chino Spectrum Marketplace and Chino Spectrum Towne Center, for a wide variety of businesses, many of them chains and big-box stores. Cravings by 99 Ranch Market is a combo Asian grocery store and food hall with a handful of restaurants. Options include Kra-Pow's Thai specialties and Tony's Barbecue for Filipino favorites. Other grocers include Stater Bros. Markets on Schaefer Avenue and Superior Grocers on Central Avenue. To the west, across SR-71, there's The Shoppes at Chino Hills, with about 80 stores and restaurants. There are plenty of options along SR-71. "Once you take the 71 from the 60, almost every exit has shopping," Flores says.
Chino Airport and aircraft museums, OIA
Close to home, Chino Airport has general aviation services for independent pilots and corporate users. For regular passenger flights, it's about 9 miles to Ontario International Airport (OIA) and 55 miles to LAX. Aircraft noise and chemtrails from nearby airports concern some area residents. Noise events may be reported to the Chino Airport via an online form that accepts audio file uploads. There is a web form and a hotline for OIA. The city has undertaken steps to monitor noise, and flight paths have sometimes been altered. The general public doesn't use Chino Airport for flights, but they might visit to see the Planes of Fame Museum and the Yanks Air Museum. Included between the two museums is an extensive collection of restored American aircraft, historical artifacts and a youth education center. Events at the Planes of Fame include flying demos, wine-tasting fundraiser Taste of Flight in November and family-friendly Hangar Talk, which features presentations, reenactors and museum guides. Kilroy Coffee Klatch's monthly gathering invites veterans and their guests to socialize and enjoy the museum and special presentations.
'Cow Town' and wildfire risks
Flores says Chino used to be called 'Cow Town' but has changed its ways. "What happened is they reduced the amount of farms and started building residential." Many dairy businesses are north of the airport in Ontario Ranch, but Flores says livestock odors don't overly affect College Park. "It's not that bad, though it may smell like manure when it rains."Wildfires threaten the region, but the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's fire hazard severity scale has not identified any very high hazards within Chino. The Chino General Plan recommends that home sites include clearance around structures, as well as fire-resistant ground cover and roofing.
