A growing suburban community with a rural flair

According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, a suburb is "a smaller community adjacent to or within commuting distance of a city." Based on that definition, Choctaw, Oklahoma is textbook suburbia, but up close, it’s so much more than that. It's only a few miles from the bustle of Oklahoma City. But with wide, open spaces and a small-town feel, Choctaw seems like a world away. "Choctaw is a great community. It has a country feel with trees and acreage, but it's convenient," says Shane Willard, a Realtor with Century 21 Goodyear Green who has over 13 years of experience. "It's only around 15 minutes from downtown OKC and only 5 to 10 minutes from Tinker Air Force Base. It's a very in-demand area."

The residential pockets of Choctaw

Choctaw has a mix of house styles, from 1970s ranch styles to modern farmhouses, but Traditional style homes, built from the 1980s to the current day, are the most common. Choctaw homes are located in residential pockets connected by elm tree-lined scenic roads and, for the most part, are home to long driveways and neat front yards. "It's spread out with big acre lots," Willard says. "People like to have their space, and many of them move to Choctaw for the acreage and the schools." With ample variation in house size and growing demand, list prices average around $300,000, but they can range from $120,000 for a three-bedroom home to over $550,000 depending on the size and condition of the home and the amount of land on the property.

Scholarships from Choctaw High School

Choctaw elementary-age children attend a few different schools, depending on where they live in the area, including Choctaw Elementary and L.W. Westfall Elementary, which have both earned an A-minus from Niche. Older students can attend Choctaw Middle which has earned a B from Niche, before heading to the highly regarded Choctaw High School. "Choctaw High School is probably at the top of their class when it comes to football and all the other sports in their athletic program," says Willard. The high school has also received a B-minus from Niche and has the Ticket to Rose Scholarship, where all graduating students can receive a scholarship to the nearby Rose State College.

Oklahoma beer at Charlie's Sports Grill

Those with a hanker for a juicy burger, will want to try the Cowboy Kicker or the Aloha at Tasty Burger, Choctaw's best burger joint, according to Willard. For a lively place to watch a game or belt out the 1980s hits during patio karaoke, there's Charlie's Sports Grill, a popular local hang-out, where cold Oklahoma beers are on tap and Sooner football is on TV. Those watching sports from the comfort of home can stock up on game-day snack supplies at the Choctaw Walmart Supercenter, conveniently located just off the main road through town.

Fishing at 10 Acre Lake

For outdoor fun, folks visit Choctaw Creek Park, where they find walking trails, a disc golf course and equestrian trails for leisurely horseback rides on sunny afternoons. A more relaxed setting is found at 10 Acre Lake Park. The park is known to be a great fishing spot in the area and also features a spacious playground, as well as trails to explore the lake.

Neighborhood events at Choctaw Creek Park

Neighbors collect at Choctaw Creek Park to enjoy community events like Christmas in The Park, where residents can get pictures with Santa and peruse through goods from local vendors while sipping on provided hot cocoa. From May to September, the town hosts Friday Nights in the Park, a weekly event where visitors can shop local vendors and grab a quick food truck meal at Choctaw Creek Park's farmers market.

Passing trains to the south

Cutting through the neighborhood, just south of the center of town, is a railroad that runs east to west. Residents living near the tracks are within earshot of passing trains, which can be a disturbance to some. However, it does not cause much of a traffic issue, as it runs parallel to Northeast 23rd Street.
