In East End, residents can head out on their boats and enjoy waterfront views from their porches. The Ohio River anchors both the recreational and restaurant scene here, but it has also shaped much of the neighborhood's culture. Settlers were originally drawn to the area's fertile land in the mid-1800s. By the 1900s, the community had solidified its shipbuilding and manufacturing industries. Today, East End's industrial presence remains as new residential development begins to flourish. However, there's more to East End than industries and housing options. "Everybody seems to stick together since we have a lot of floods," says longtime resident Rob Beck, who helps run the local eatery Hitching Post Kellogg. "We all like to help each other," he adds, citing how community members come together the minute the water recedes.

Older homes and new construction
East End's older homes date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, reflecting Foursquare and Victorian Vernacular styles with porches. They typically sit on modest lots and range in price from $250,000 to $450,000, depending on their size, condition and location. The neighborhood has also become the site of new construction. Newer homes sit side by side, reflecting custom-built and contemporary designs. Prices for these homes usually go for anywhere between $700,000 to $1.1 million. "Prices really depend on whether the home is in a flood zone," says local Realtor Brian Thomas with Coldwell Banker. Most properties that receive high Flood Factor Scores are near the Ohio River. Buyers will find that the community receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 3 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Home to multiple marinas, East End has become a popular option for boat owners. The Four Seasons Marina also offers everything from a golf club to sand volleyball courts. Most notably, the community boasts the Ohio River Launch Club, one of the nation's oldest yacht clubs. For other recreational options, there's the Otto Armleder Memorial Park, which features miles of paved walking paths and a designated dog park. Those wanting to practice their swings can enjoy the public Reeves Golf Course, which offers 9- and 18-hole options. Nearby, at the Lunken Playfield, bikers explore trails while children have fun on the playground. The park is a go-to spot for those wanting to see the planes departing from and landing at the Lunken Airport.

Riverview East Academy educates East End residents in K-12 grades.
Riverview East Academy
Children can enroll in Cincinnati Public Schools like Riverview East Academy, which receives a C rating from Niche and serves preschool through 12th-grade students. At the elementary level, students learn about typing skills and online safety in addition to traditional subjects. For Grades 4 through 6, they'll have the opportunity to win pizza parties and go on field trips by showcasing good behavior. In middle school, students can begin taking courses for high school credit. At the high school level, there's a healthcare program where students can learn how to do CPR, take vital signs and other basic nursing skills. Students can leave the program with certifications in CPR, phlebotomy and more.
Lunken Farmers Market, Peddlers Flea Market and Riverfront Live
For fresh produce and flowers, there's the Lunken Farmers Produce Market, which is open on Saturdays from May through November. On the weekends, the Peddlers Flea Market offers a selection of vintage items. Nearby, Riverfront Live is the neighborhood's outdoor music venue. Here, eventgoers can dance to live music with a view of the river and the Cincinnati skyline in the distance.

"We've got tons of regulars," some that have been coming for over 50 years. For a nice evening out, there's The Precinct By Jeff Ruby, an award-winning steakhouse. A dimly lit interior, stained glass features and chandeliers add to the restaurant’s fine dining experience. For groceries, there is a nearby Kroger.

The Lunken Airport: Flying lessons and events
"The Lunken Airport is a friend of the community," Beck says. Over time, it has become a central part of East End's culture, drawing in people from near and far. Aspiring pilots can take lessons through the Cincinnati Flight School, while others come for events. The popular Lunken Airport Days features everything from helicopter rides to a classic color guard ceremony. While adding to the community's vibrancy, the airport has increased noise pollution for nearby residents.
