South Cumminsville
Older homes, renovations and more
In South Cumminsville, homes sit alongside narrow, sidewalk-lined streets where people often park. Houses come in various shapes and sizes, reflecting everything from early 20th-century narrow detached row homes complete with decorative awnings to classic bungalows. The community also boasts a couple of new, and newly renovated, properties. "Working In Neighborhoods builds and rehabs homes for first-time homebuyers," Behrens says. "We've done close to 70 single-family homes here." Depending on the age, size and condition, most properties cost between $80,000 and $170,000. However, single-family homes can sell for as low as $50,000 if they need significant renovations. These prices are significantly lower than the Cincinnati area's median home price of just under $300,000. For alternative options, The Garfield Commons — a school-turned-apartment complex — and The Commons at South Cumminsville, both offer low-income housing opportunities. Prospective residents should also note that properties near Mill Creek and its tributary, West Fork Creek, receive higher-than-average Flood Factor Scores.Mr. Gene's Dog House, Elmore Street Cafe and Fey's Supermarket
At the seasonal Mr. Gene's Dog House, longtime residents have lined up for over 60 years to enjoy hot dogs and chili cheese fries. Over time, this eatery has become the community's go-to for a quick meal from mid-February through early October. For nights out, Elmore Street Cafe offers happy hour specials and has steadily become the classic neighborhood watering hole with its live music and karaoke nights. For additional dining options, locals will have to head into downtown Cincinnati or neighboring communities like Northside. The Park Diner, located in Northside, is known for its burgers. As for groceries, the small Fey's Supermarket has been serving the community for over 75 years; and there's always the South Cumminsville Community Garden for fresh produce. Many locals also head to the nearest Kroger location for a wider selection of options.Wayne Recreation Area and nearby green spaces
The Wayne Recreation Area serves as South Cumminsville's central hub of activity. Here, basketball players shoot hoops while parents line up along the sidelines to watch youth football games. Even the park's public restroom has become a celebrated feature. When it first opened in 2016, residents gathered for a party dubbed "The Royal Flush." Those wanting to squeeze in a workout, can head to the nearby Millvale Recreation Center. Locals are also just a short drive from some of Cincinnati's most visited spaces. They're less than 5 miles from the award-winning Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens, where they'll find Fiona, a hippo that has become a local celebrity. Just east of the neighborhood is the Mt. Airy Forest. Some come here for the disc golf course, while others check out the densely wooded pathways.South Cumminsville Neighborhood Skating Party and other events
The community council brings locals together with events like the annual South Cumminsville Neighborhood Skating Party, which is held each June. "We get about 100 folks out for that event," Behrens says. This is over 10% of the community's population. Free entry and transportation to and from the rink are just some reasons the attendance rate is so high. Recently, South Cumminsville rolled out The Beekman Community Market, which is held every third Saturday of the month. In August, the community hosts Summer Vibes, an event complete with face painting for the kids, live music and food.Ethel M. Taylor Academy and Withrow University High School
Children can enroll in Cincinnati Public Schools like Ethel M. Taylor Academy, which receives a C rating from Niche and serves students in preschool through sixth grade. The school partners with local groups like the University of Cincinnati's Bearcat Buddies and Grad Cincinnati for tutoring services. From there, children head to C-rated Withrow University High School, which serves students from more than 35 countries. Students in Grades 7 through 10 attend The Prep Academy, focusing on passing state exams. For their last two years, they head to The Senior Institute, where they can take advantage of College Credit Plus courses. Students can take finance, marketing and legal writing classes through the school's business program. For higher learning opportunities, the University of Cincinnati is less than 5 miles away.A resident-led safety movement
South Cumminsville receives a CAP Index crime score of 9 out of 10, which is higher than the national average of 4. However, according to Behrens, residents are working on improving safety, particularly along the roads. "Over the last ten years, a lot of work has been done to address traffic speed and safety down Beckman Street," Behrens says, mentioning the incoming speed bumps that "residents have been advocating for." In recent years, South Cumminsville has also "gotten new intersections, crosswalks and three-way stops." Behrens says that residents have also been working to decrease illegal dumping. The community brought "city officials to not only see [dumping sights] but also to smell them." The nonprofit 'Keep Cincinnati Beautiful' has helped reduce the problem by implementing cameras and Don't Dump the Nati (a play on Cincinnati's nickname), a program that collects and properly disposes of commonly dumped items.Commutes to downtown Cincinnati and more
South Cumminsville is conveniently bordered by Interstate 74, which residents use to get in and out of the neighborhood. However, to get to downtown Cincinnati, which is just about 5 miles away, residents hop on Interstate 75. They can take that same route to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, which is approximately 17 miles away. Many residents also take the public bus system, the Metro, to get around. As for work, a number of people here work within the retail, manufacturing or healthcare sectors. Conveniently, residents are less than 4 miles from the Cincinnati Children's Medical Center and the UC Medical Center, both of which are just east of the community.
