Circle Pines is a cozy Twin Cities suburb with outdoor fun

Circle Pines is a Twin Cities suburb that prides itself on its outdoor recreation and close-knit community, centered around Golden Lake Park. This gem is just one of the many parks in the small city, which has about 5,000 residents. There are a handful of local restaurants in the area, but you’ll need to do a little bit of driving for most errands. There’s easy highway access, and you can reach either of the Twin Cities in half an hour or less.

Ranch-style homes typically cost less than in Lino Lakes

Gentle hills with wide streets fill Circle Pines, where mid-20th-century homes like split-levels and ranch-style houses make up most of the market. Long driveways typically lead to attached garages, but some older properties have detached garages. You can also find some New Traditional townhouses and single-family homes, which became more common after the 1980s. The median single-family home price is lower than in Lino Lakes, with prices generally ranging from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$700,000s. Townhouses can cost between the high $100,000s and the mid-$300,000s.

Golden Lake Park is the heart of the city’s recreation

Circle Pines has no shortage of outdoor recreation, especially with Golden Lake in the heart of the city. “We have a lot of jewels in Circle Pines, but Golden Lake Park on the southwestern side of the lake is the crown jewel,” says Mayor Matt Percy. “We have more resources focused here than in any other park, and it has so many benefits and amenities.” Besides its sandy beach and boat launch, the park has playgrounds and courts for volleyball, tennis and basketball. There are plenty of other green spaces in the city, including:

  • Baldwin Park, where amenities include a hockey rink and community gardens
  • Inner Park, which has a baseball field and pickleball courts
  • Heritage Commons, which is most known for its labyrinth and walking trails
“There is just so much opportunity for people to get out, put down their electronic devices and just enjoy nature,” Percy says. Another great resource is the Centennial Library, which regularly hosts storytimes and has a communal kitchen.

Residents attend events at Golden Lake Park and in Lino Lakes

Every summer, Circle Pines hosts the Golden Lake Music in the Park series. Locals come together every Thursday from mid-June to mid-August for a free concert on the water. Residents also head to Lino Lakes for annual events like Blue Heron Days, a community celebration with food trucks, carnival games and a parade.

Students attend highly rated Centennial Public Schools

Circle Pines is part of the Centennial Public School District, which receives an A-minus from Niche. “For anyone who is looking to start a family or bring their existing family in, we’ve got a very strong school system, with good quality education and a lot of strong support from the community,” Percy says. The district includes the B-plus-rated Centennial High School, where students can enroll in career and technical education courses in manufacturing or engineering.
