The unique neighborhood of Clackamas has more going for it than you might expect. South Portland natives may see the community as little more than a waypoint between Happy Valley and Oregon City, or as the home of Camp Withycombe and the Oregon Military Museum, but local residents know Clackamas is a hidden gem. While the neighborhood is mostly commercial, those lucky enough to snag a home in the area love the convenient shopping and dining, as well as the abundant outdoor opportunities offered by the parks in the area. Clackamas’ housing inventory is made up of smaller manufactured units at its center, and more spacious mid-century ranches around its edges, many featuring native gardens and tree-shaded backyards.
The neighborhood’s selling point is, above all, its convenience. When locals need to pick up groceries or everyday essentials, they can probably find what they need at Fred Meyer. And if not, Clackamas Town Center almost certainly has what they’re looking for. The mall features a variety of big box department stores like REI , Barnes and Noble and Ulta Beauty, along with a movie theater and a Dave & Buster’s. And for Kirkland aficionados and bulk shopping fanatics, there’s a Costco Wholesale store just across the street.
As for dining options, Clackamas may not have the fanciest restaurants in greater Portland, but it has some of the tastiest. Akira Sushi has some of the best sashimi in the South Portland Suburbs, or if you prefer your meals with a healthy dose of folksy charm, grab a patty melt at the always-popular Dean’s Homestyle Cafe — just be ready to wait a little while for a table to open up. Looking for something to wash it all down? You can grab a pint and pick up a pool cue at the Crow’s Nest Lounge.
While Clackamas is primarily a business district, that doesn’t mean there aren’t outdoor and entertainment opportunities nearby. Riverside Park alongside the crystal clear Clackamas River is the go-to local spot for cooling off on a hot summer day, as well as a great place to catch a steelhead trout. And those looking for something a bit more taxing can visit Mount Talbert Nature Park and enjoy its four miles of picturesque trails. For a more manicured outdoor experience, the local Sah-Hah-Lee Golf Course and Driving Range has 18 picture-perfect holes for serious golfers, along with a full minigolf course for kids and putt-putt enthusiasts.
And when locals want to get out of town, Clackamas is ideally situated to explore the South Portland Suburbs. The shopping, dining, history and entertainment of cultural and commercial centers like Oregon City, Milwaukie, Southgate and Happy Valley are all less than ten minutes from town by car. For big ticket entertainment, downtown Portland is just 25 minutes away, as are the amazing hikes of Mt. Hood National Forest.
Homes in the area are within the North Clackamas School District, and most local schools are quite strong. The majority of the neighborhood is in the attendance area for Clackamas High, a national Blue Ribbon School which is regularly ranked among the best high schools in Oregon.
Clackamas is an unassuming neighborhood that just happens to be in one of the most convenient locations in the South Portland Suburbs.
