A township built around the Garden State Parkway
During the summer months, bicyclists head to the paved trails at Oak Ridge Park in Clark, New Jersey. Runners train on the track, and families sit by the Community Pool across the street, taking in the suburban sun less than 30 miles from Manhattan. Unlike Fanwood, Garwood and Westfield to the north, Clark doesn’t have its own train station; instead of New Jersey Public Transit, commuters rely on the Garden State Parkway, where they can expect a healthy amount of traffic during rush hour. Clark was predominantly agricultural until the arrival of the Parkway (then known as State Highway No. 4) around the time of the Second World War, and housing developers built modest Cape Cods, cottages and Colonial Revivals. Many still stand today, reminders of mid-century suburbia; recent decades have also seen the arrival of big box retailers and chain grocers, ushering Clark to the 21st century. The neighborhood is also known for its large recreation department. “We’ve had people specifically say that they wanted to move to Clark for the recreation program,” says director Ralph Bernardo, who’s called the township home for nearly 40 years, adding, “We have over 150 programs, events and classes throughout the year. More so than any in Union County.” According to Bernardo, “People will make friends at something like the adult cooking classes and still to this day go out to dinner to meet afterward.” In other words, it’s the kind of place where people know their neighbors and families stay for generations.
The Garden State Parkway runs through Clark and provides easy access to both the north & south.

Homes dating back to the baby boom
In Clark, many homes date back to the baby boom era: the 1940s, ’50s and early ’60s. Cape Cods, cottages, ranch-styles and Colonial-inspired homes are common, and prices for these properties generally hover between $450,000 and $700,000. Buyers will find detached single-car garages, and although most streets aren’t lined with sidewalks, they are quiet enough for basketball hoops and dog walking. Those looking to put down roots in Clark will also find New Construction; five-bedroom traditional homes built within the last few years start around $900,000 and can easily surpass $1 million. Lot sizes average around a quarter of an acre; during the fall, curbs are lined with leaf bags for the township to retrieve.
Many of the homes in Clark were built in the days of the Baby Boom and are well kept.

Union County Career & Technical Institute and early college programs
Area elementary schools include Valley Road Elementary and Frank K. Hehnly Elementary, which received an A-minus and B-plus from the educational review site, Niche, respectively. Carl H. Kumpf Middle School also earned a B-plus, and Arthur L. Johnson High has a B. After their freshman year, some students choose to enroll at the Union County Career & Technical Institute, where they receive instruction in everything from digital multimedia design to cosmetology. There’s also the Union College Program and, through Fairleigh Dickinson University, the Early College Program, which allows qualified students to receive college credit.

Classic diners and a L'Oréal “Morning of Beauty”
For generations, Manny’s Diner has been serving up everything from Matzoh Ball Soup to fresh-made cheesecake on Raritan Road. Bernardo recommends their French toast. Farther up the street, find Clark White Diamond, which has remained more or less than the same (checkered floor and all) since it first started selling burgers back in 1947. Central Avenue is home to fast food stops like McDonald’s and Wendy’s. Nearby, find big box retailers like Target and Marshalls. Neighborhood grocery options include Whole Foods and ShopRite. “L’oreal is the biggest company in Clark,” says Bernardo, adding, “They’ll offer a morning of beauty for seniors when they can come and do makeup and nails.”

A Memorial Day parade, fireworks on the Fourth and tree-lighting ceremonies
Not only is the Deutscher Club of Clark known for its schnitzel, but it’s also been an important neighborhood gathering place since 1950. At the club, members and their guests can attend whiskey tastings, trivia nights and book clubs. Other events like Frühlingsfest and Oktoberfest are open to the public in the Biergarten. According to Bernardo, locals come together for a “huge” Memorial Day Parade every year, and there’s a firework show on the Fourth of July. “We also have the annual tree lighting and festival with animals and rides and decorating contests for Christmas,” he says, also mentioning the annual Senior Citizens Barbeque and Easter Egg Hunt.
Dozens of classes through Clark Recreation
Clark Recreation offers a long list of youth sporting camps, including T-ball, basketball and field hockey; there are also classes that don’t require lacing up sneakers, like fashion design and cooking. Adults can sign up for ballroom dancing and yoga, and seniors can meet up for line dancing and Tai Chi. Bernardo says the pickleball club has an especially devoted membership. Clark residents get discounted memberships at the Community Pool, where kids can take swim lessons or play tetherball by the water. 2024 marks its 50th anniversary. Oak Ridge Park has a disc golf course and a 5K-worth of paved walking trails. Above, find the Ash Brook Reservation, where Revolutionary War soldiers marched 250 years ago. Attached is the Ash Brook Golf Course, which is open to the public. Located next to Clark Common Shopping Center, mini golf fans enjoy the Hyatt Hills Golf Complex.
