Quiet countryside living on modern estates west of Ellicott City
Located just 13 miles southwest of Ellicott City, Dayton is a rural neighborhood with large estates on wide lots. Known for its nearby public schools and peace and quiet, this is a commuter neighborhood for those who prefer to get away from the city yet still have access to its amenities. “In Dayton, you may have to drive everywhere, but you’ll find an estate home on three or more acres,” says Michelle Boucher, a Realtor with Keller Williams Lucido Agency who hosts a Dinner & Downsizing event every year for homeowners looking to live more simply. “Even with the older homes like ranchers or homes from the 1960s through 1980s, you’ll probably have a lot of property, peace and quiet.” The rural atmosphere is just part of Dayton’s charm. With highly rated Howard County public schools and private options, as well as fast access to local pick-your-own farms and county fairs, Dayton residents can live a quiet lifestyle with a small-town feel. The CAP Index Score for Dayton is 1 out of 10, which is significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Million-dollar estates in Dayton
Homes on the lower end of Dayton’s pricing include Cape Cods and country cottages from the 1940s, with stone chimneys, covered front porches and plenty of yard space. These homes can range from $450,000 to $600,000, but they are a bit of a rarity. Most homes in Dayton cost between $700,000 and $2 million, and consist of raised ranch homes on manicured hills, large Colonial Revivals from the 1980s with four or more bedrooms and New England-inspired countryside estates. These estates were often built between the early 2000s and mid-2010s and can feature two-car garages at the end of long, wide driveways that weave through private property. Whether tucked away in small, forested thickets or bordering local farmland, most homes have that peace and quiet Dayton residents prefer.

Local parks and ballfields, as well as recreation trails
Dayton Oaks Park shares space with Dayton Oaks Elementary School and offers a playground, tennis courts and walking trails that surround the school’s sports fields. Down the road, Buckshot Field is an athletic complex for leagues and after-work teams, and Pig Tail Recreation Area is a kayaking and bank fishing spot. Locals can walk the trails or view the water and wildlife. Nearby neighborhoods like Cooksville and Lisbon have pick-your-own farms with seasonal apples, pumpkins and berries. Their farm stores sell homemade goodies like honey and crafts, and every year, Dayton residents can attend the Howard County Fair in Cooksville.

Emmert's Seafood and nearby stores in Clarksville
The only restaurant in Dayton proper is Emmert’s Seafood, a roadside diner with steam-to-order crab, hushpuppies and crab cakes. So, without much in the way of a shopping hub, most Dayton residents travel out of town to shop and dine. Though there are a few spots on Ten Oaks Road, such as the Ten Oaks Tavern and K-9 Coffee Lounge, Clarksville’s Giant Food and Roots Market are the closest major grocery stores. Not to mention, nearby towns like Fulton or Ellicott City are less than 30 minutes away and have dozens of restaurants, grocery stores, boutiques and amenities that Dayton residents prefer.

Commutes to Ellicott City, Baltimore and the BWI airport
Because of its quiet, rural atmosphere, Dayton locals drive to get most everywhere. Commuters can take Triadelphia Road to Ellicott City, about 13 miles away, in about a half hour. Or they can take Route 32 and reach Interstate 95, which runs all the way to Baltimore in about 45 minutes, depending on traffic. The Baltimore Washington International Airport is about 23 miles east via Route 32. “It used to all be farmland in this area, but even though it’s still pretty rural, now it’s a major commuter area relatively close to all the best routes between D.C. and Baltimore,” Boucher says.
