Country club living and rural mansion homes in Glenwood's quiet countryside
Located in the heart of Howard County’s rural countryside, Glenwood is a popular neighborhood for commuters who enjoy nature and living on multi-acre lots. “This area is both rural and commutable. We’re right in the middle of Baltimore, Frederick and Washington, and we’re an hour outside of Gettysburg. So, really, you’re surrounded by job opportunities, and that keeps the area popular and housing prices steady,” says Chuck Zepp, a Realtor with eXp Realty who grew up in the area on his father’s dairy farm and has been selling homes and lots nearby for 25 years. Most homes in the area are large, countryside mansions with three to five acres of land.
Local public and private schools are some of the highest rated in the state, and agricultural traditions make for fun weekends of apple picking or spending time outside. Glenwood’s park, library and community center bring neighbors together, and the Cattail Creek Country Club is a relaxing destination for its members. With access to nearby highways and major metropolitan areas, Glenwood is a great spot to live peacefully in Howard County. The CAP Index Score is 1 out of 10, which is significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Countryside estates on large swaths of acreage
Single-family homes in Glenwood, just like neighboring areas, are often priced between $600,000 and $2 million. Prices are influenced by the highly rated schools and commutability of the area, as well as the large lots and quiet countryside atmosphere. Modern traditional estates on several acres have many New England style influences, such as Colonial and Greek Revival, with wide, symmetrical windows, columned front porches and stoops, big sloping roofs and manicured gardens. Though most floorplans are sized over 5,000 square feet, there are a few smaller ones situated around town, such as Cape Cods, split levels or ranch-style homes.
Buyers can also choose from an assortment of townhouses out in the Cattail Creek community. “Cattail Creek is a 55-and-up community near the country club. It’s a gorgeous area and there are estate homes there as well,” says Michelle Boucher, a Realtor with Keller Williams Lucido Agency. Townhouses include attached units with their own single-car garages, as well as spacious floorplans and amenities like fireplaces, back decks or patios, carpeted basements and modern appliances. These units can cost roughly between $600,000 and $650,000.

Agricultural events and pick-your-own farms
Because of this area’s deep roots in agricultural history, local events and traditions are common in Glenwood, as well as neighboring areas like Cooksville and Lisbon. Cooksville is home to the Howard County Fair, which has seen thousands of visitors per year since its inception in 1946. Pick-your-own fruit and vegetable farms around town, like Larriland Farm or TLV Tree Farm, offer seasonal produce, pumpkins and live turkeys for purchase during the holidays. The Farmers Lisbon Christmas Horse Parade is exactly what it sounds like, where farmers, tractors and their horses parade down the street to help raise money for local causes.
Highly rated public and private schools in Howard County
Glenwood students can access highly rated public schools, such as Triadelphia Ridge Elementary School, which teaches kindergarten through fifth grade. They can then move on to Folly Quarter Middle School and, finally, Glenelg High School. All three schools are graded an A on Niche and are highly regarded for their championship soccer and lacrosse teams, art classes, STEM subjects and diverse student populations. Glenelg Country School is rated an A-plus on Niche and is a private, nonsectarian school that teaches kindergarten through 12th grade. Many families choose to send their children to private schools in town.

Glenwood is one of the more bustling parts of rural Howard County, with a small strip of shops and restaurants on Route 97. Local favorites include Rosie’s Delicatessen, a small sandwich shop and convenience store, and Walker’s Tap & Table, a trendy modern bar with craft brews and American pub fare. Pen Oaks Winery is right up the road, with a view of the countryside and German and Italian-style wines. Familiar chains like Subway and Dunkin’ round out the area’s amenities, and though High’s is the closest gas station, it only sells a few gallons of milk and basic groceries.
