With wide-open green space and curving streets, Riverwood is a serene setting for residents. But they still might worry about one thing — making sure to duck if someone yells “Fore!”

This neighborhood in the greater Raleigh area is built around Riverwood Golf Club, a championship-level course offering 27 holes to test even the most skilled golfer. Members also can enjoy the driving range, athletic facilities and in-house restaurant.

On the residential side, Riverwood homes stand apart from one another, with large front lawns yielding to backyards that open to the golf course greenery. Most houses were built along with the course at the turn of this century, so housing styles reflect the late 1990s and early 2000s. Millennium designs are highlighted by complex rooflines and high-peaked gables, while American Vernacular homes offer a more subdued yet refined presence.

Riverwood’s southern edge borders the Neuse River, which flows nearly 300 miles southeast to Pamlico Sound and the Outer Banks. The river is perfect for kayaking or fishing, and residents can easily access Clayton River Walk on the Neuse. This paved greenway connects to the even larger Neuse River Trail, which runs more than 30 miles along the banks.

Riverwood is entirely residential, and it’s part of the Johnston County Public Schools system, which serves nearly 40,000 students.

Here in Clayton, a satellite town of Raleigh, Riverwood residents enjoy a natural and sporty setting with the bustle of downtown less than 20 miles away.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
