Buckeye-Shaker is a close-knit community with shopping districts

Buckeye-Shaker has a strong community spirit on the edge of Cleveland's suburbs, less than 10 miles from downtown. The century-old homes here are less expensive than those in the surrounding neighborhoods. Commuters can take the bus or light rail into the city, and you can find plenty to do within the neighborhood. Two of the most popular shopping districts, Shaker Square and Larchmere Arts District, are in Buckeye-Shaker, and Luke Easter Park is minutes away.

Buckeye-Shaker has more renters, is less expensive than nearby areas

Like many of its neighbors, homes in Buckeye-Shaker date back to the early 1900s. Foursquares, bungalows and Tudor Revivals are common. “A lot of the stock in this neighborhood is actually multifamily, so think duplexes and triplexes,” says Michael Cancelliere, a Realtor with Howard Hanna, who has worked in the area for five years. “So, a lot of the population around here is actually renters.” Housing prices trend much lower than the rest of the Cleveland Metro Area, including nearby communities like Shaker Heights. Most of these multifamily houses, as well as move-in-ready single-family homes, cost anywhere from the low $100,000s to the low $300,000s, depending on size and condition. You can find an investment property for less than $100,000. Condos generally range from under $100,000 to the low $400,000s.

For almost a decade, Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity has worked with local churches, including Calvary Hill Church of God in Christ, to help revitalize older homes and build new ones on vacant lots, including Pope Leo Village.

Commuters have easy access to the light rail and bus line

Public transportation is easily accessible through the Greater Cleveland Rapid Transit Authority, although major roads like Shaker Boulevard offer a 20-minute drive to downtown. It’s also about a 15-minute train ride from Shaker Square, and about a 45-minute bus ride. You can reach major employers like University Hospital in half an hour. “You’re right at the edge of the suburbs, so you really have it all right there,” Cancelliere says. “Not to say there isn’t plenty to do in your own front yard.”

Many of the neighborhood’s events are at Shaker Square. The North Union Farmers Market is every Saturday morning from April through December, and includes vendors selling fresh produce, baked goods and other locally sourced products. “You’re on the edge of food deserts in Buckeye-Shaker, so having that community-driven event is really paramount,” Cancelliere says. You can also enjoy live music or seasonal celebrations like Sparkle on the Square, a tree-lighting event with cookie decorating and pictures with Santa.
