Urban amenities in a quieter atmosphere in Maple Valley
With a distinctly suburban feel despite being less than 20 miles from New York City, Maple Valley offers a break from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple. This Clifton neighborhood allows residents the opportunity for a quieter life that doesn’t have to mean sacrificing urban amenities. The area’s natural beauty and ample greenery attract people to Maple Valley's blended lifestyle. “It’s not just the access to New York that makes Clifton noteworthy,” says Matthew Defede, real estate broker and owner of Realty Executives Elite Homes. “You’ve also got lower costs of living, and the industry means that taxes are lower too.” With residents having a choice between a day in the city or a day relaxing outside, Maple Valley offers more than just a little bit of both worlds.
Single-family homes from $300,000
Since its transformation from an agricultural community to a New York City suburb during the 1950s, Maple Valley has remained charmingly old-fashioned. A quintessential suburb in many ways, prospective homebuyers will find an array of classic styles on its grid-patterned streets, including colonial revivals, Cape Cods, and ranch-style homes. “One of the best things about living in Maple Valley is the space it affords you,” says Alena Ciccarelli, Realtor Associate with Christie’s International Real Estate and longtime resident of the area. “You can look forward to big backyards and room to entertain, something that’s a rarity in a lot of the nearby area.” Prices for a single-family home start around $375,000 and range up to $850,000 – though particularly large estates with views of NYC may reach as high as $2 million.
Maple Valley is known for its abundance of tightly-arranged Cape Cods and split levels.
Split-level homes are common throughout New Jersey, and Maple Valley is no exception.

Shopping and dining on Van Houten Avenue
Van Houten Avenue serves as the area’s central business district, offering a number of shopping and dining options – though none are as beloved as The Barrow House, a farmhouse-style bar and grill known for its rustic atmosphere and elevated comfort food. The Bagel Station serves up classic New Jersey breakfast in the form of made-to-order bagel sandwiches, while Maple Valley Diner sits along Highway 46 and offers classic diner food in a retro setting. Locals looking to cook at home fill up their pantries at the nearby Stop & Shop. For retail therapy, The Promenade Shops at Clifton is known for its nationally recognizable retailers and designer brands. “The shopping that Clifton offers is a huge draw,” says Ciccarelli. “Even people from the city will make their way down here for better prices and easy access to stores that are a lot harder to get to up there.”
Maple Valley commuters stop in at The Bagel Station for a quick breakfast before work.
You'll find several shopping plazas on Route 3, like the Clifton Towne Square.

Stefan Tatarenko Park
Located just off Garden State Parkway, Stefan Tatarenko Park serves as the heart of the community with its tree-lined open fields and ample room for activities. “One of the first things you notice about a community like Maple Valley is how much of an emphasis on outdoor fun there is,” says Ciccarelli. “You just have so much more space to get out and enjoy nature than you do in most places nearby.” Nearby, residents can also appreciate the lush trees of Morris Canal Park or take advantage of Holster Park’s pickleball courts.
There's space to play at Stefan Tatarenko Memorial Park in Maple Valley, Clifton.

Commuting on Highway 46, Garden State Parkway
With its proximity to New York, Maple Valley is most convenient options for commuters. Residents are close enough to appreciate the NYC skyline from their backyards, and access to Highway 46 and Garden State Parkway make hopping in the car a viable option – though traffic can still have an impact. “Because of the industry and commercial options available, along with general work traffic, the area can get congested at times,” says Defede. Residents also have the option to take the bus thanks to Clifton’s many bus stops, or head to the nearby train station.
