Saint Bernice offers rural living in Vermillion County
Saint Bernice is a quiet rural community a few miles from the Indiana-Illinois state line, about 30 minutes north of Terre Haute. Established in the 1860s, it was a thriving coal mining town with several businesses, a schoolhouse and a population of more than 1,000 people. As the mines closed, residents left in search of jobs elsewhere, and the community declined as buildings became vacant. Today, Saint Bernice has a population of about 600. "It's quaint and neighborly. People wave at you when they drive by," says Jeff Michalic, owner and managing broker of Mossy Oak Properties Indiana Land and Lifestyle. "Most [buyers] are looking for affordability, and they like having neighbors."
Large lots and a variety of home styles and prices
Saint Bernice's housing stock consists of unfussy farmhouses, bungalows, Craftsman-inspired and ranch-style homes. "It's an old coal community, so there's a lot of old worker housing," Michaeli says. "As you leave town, the houses are more spread out, there's more acreage, and the lots get bigger." Many lots have room for detached garages, sheds and workshops. Residents take advantage of the rural setting by relaxing on the front porch, planting gardens with native plants or grilling in the backyard. Home sales data is limited, but prices for small fixer-uppers can range from $50,000 to $100,000. Larger homes, some of which have been updated, can cost between $125,000 and $275,000. A few properties on multiple acres can cost up to $350,000.
Playing at Miller Park and hunting in-season game
Miller Park is a point of pride for the community. Parents can watch their kids let loose on the playground from the comfort of one of four shelter houses. The park also features a basketball court, a sand volleyball court and a disc golf course that was added in 2022.
Anglers can fish in nearby creeks and lakes. "Hunting is a big deal, and people lease land or have connections with local people to hunt on their land," Michalic says. Most hunting and trapping happens in spring and fall, when deer and wild turkey are more active. Deer hunters can get their game processed in Clinton and Terre Haute.
High schoolers can participate in Wabash River CTE programs
Kids can attend schools in South Vermillion Community School Corporation in Clinton. Central Elementary School receives a C-plus from Niche, while South Vermillion Middle School receives a C. Juniors and seniors at South Vermillion High School, B-minus, can participate in Wabash River Career and Technical Education programs. Students can choose from courses like construction technology, robotics and graphic design.
Residents drive to Paris, IL, for groceries and shopping
The local watering hole, Red's Tavern, is a quintessential dive bar known for its inexpensive drinks, live music and welcoming atmosphere. As the motto says, "It's always a party at Red's." The American Legion serves as another popular meeting spot for the community. Most residents cross the state line border to buy groceries, run errands and grab a bite to eat in Paris, Illinois. A little closer to home, Clinton has a handful of restaurants and grocery stores like Walmart and Kirby Foods.
A 30-minute drive to Terre Haute
Saint Bernice has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, much lower than the national average. State Route 71 is the main thoroughfare that cuts through the community. Terre Haute is 21 miles south on State Route 63. Medical care is available at Union Hospital Clinton and Paris Community Hospital.
Fellowship and fun at local churches
St. Bernice First Church of the Nazarene has been a cornerstone of the community for more than 100 years. The church hosts community events, like an annual Easter egg hunt. The Saint Bernice Fire Department hosts an annual Fourth of July celebration at Miller Park, with food, live entertainment and fireworks. Nearby Clinton has a yearly Little Italy Festival that celebrates the town's heritage as a homestead for Italian immigrants at the turn of the 20th century.
