Agricultural swaths of land in southeastern New York
At the intersection of Maple Avenue and South Street in Clintondale, the Gunk Haus and its outdoor patio overlook both farmland and mountains to the west. It’s a gastropub that’s served up German fare for over a decade and even rebounded from damage in 2020, where a car crashed into the front of the building and subsequently caught fire. One of the only restaurants in Clintondale, the Gunk Haus derives its name from the Shawangunk Mountains – also known as the “Gunks” – that protrude from the landscape. Clintondale sits just southeast of New Paltz and a little west of the Hudson in southeastern New York, its eastern half primarily consisting of unincorporated wilderness interrupted by a few roads. “It’s very agricultural in Clintondale,” says Alex Stier, a NYS licensed associate broker with Keller Williams Realty Hudson Valley North. “There’s no traffic light and there’s no police department. They have different farms, from fruit farms to Christmas tree farms to Minard Farms. That’s where people head quite a bit.”

Man-made landmarks near Clintondale
“Your view from Clintondale is just north enough that you get to see the Mohonk Ridge and the fire tower,” Stier says of the Sky Top Tower, which is perched on the Mohonk Mountain House property. “It’s a big, rock, round fire tower on top of the mountain and one of the most famous landmarks for everyone traveling through the Hudson Valley. I grew up sneaking up from New Paltz and Gardiner to that fire tower.” From the Sky Top area, visitors can take in views going into six states at most, though a hiking day pass is required to get to more than 80 miles of trails in the area as well as the tower itself. Branching off the nearby Highland neighborhood, the Walkway Over the Hudson is nearly 7,000 feet long and serves as a free pedestrian bridge over the river.

Restaurants amid the Clintondale landscape
Establishments for dining and otherwise are sparse in Clintondale. “They do have a post office right in the center of town, and an excellent restaurant that looks out toward the mountains,” Stier says of the Gunk Haus. “You sit out on their patio and you can look up at the Mohonk Mountain House Fire Tower.” Close to the Gunk Haus, Elixir Spring House operates as a bed-and-breakfast, but for more options residents head northwest to New Paltz. The area around Main Street and Front Street has numerous restaurants situated around it, including Moonburger, Huguenot Creamery and McGillicuddy’s. Groceries sit on shelves about five miles east at a Hannaford, located in the southern part of Highland.

Locally-owned farms and resorts
Minard’s Family Farm, just west, offers apple picking, ice cream and events during the summer, while Rocking Horse Ranch Resort boasts a list of activities including sports, tubing, horseback riding, water recreation and more. “Rocking Horse Ranch is a nice resort,” Stier says. “You can get dropped off there and not leave for five days. It’s considered a dude ranch.”
Along with the multiple nearby parks, like Minnewaska State Park Preserve and Mohonk Preserve to the west, the Hudson River flows about 15 miles east of the neighborhood. Depending on the area of the river, vessels with sails or smaller craft like canoes, rowboats and kayaks are allowed on the water. Balsam Ridge Christmas Tree Farm, near the Gunk Haus, is open seasonally and offers an assortment of decorative flora for the holiday season.

Residential streets winding through farmland and woods
Cape Cods, colonials and ranch-style homes are among the most popular architectural styles in Clintondale. It has more established residential streets than some other neighborhoods in the valley, though yards still have plenty of space and the properties are still spaced out. The Hudson Valley as a whole has seen a rising population since 2020. “When the pandemic hit, everybody left New York City and came to the Hudson Valley,” Stier says. “People gutted houses and made $200,000 houses into $600,000 houses. The prices actually tripled for a while.” Recently-sold single-family homes in Clintondale typically fall between $350,000 and around $700,000, while more expansive properties could run up past $1 million or more. Most homes are concentrated on a few streets in the middle of the area.

New York City is between 80 and 90 miles south, while Albany sits just over 70 miles north. Poughkeepsie is a trip of less than 10 miles across the river. “It’s convenient if you have a car,” Stier says of getting around the region. “You can come up to the area on Amtrak, which will stop in the Rhinecliff area on the other side of the river.”
