Small-town living with proximity to Charlotte

Originally called Clover Patch because of the abundant clover plants that grow here, Clover started as a small railroad town. Today, the railroad no longer runs through the town, and the rolling hills of clover have been sectioned into front lawns. Thirty miles south of Charlotte, just under the South Carolina border, the quaint community of Clover offers small-town living with interstate access to a big city. Danielle Childers, the Broker/Owner of Homeland Realty Group, which specializes in York County, says: "Many people who commute to work in Charlotte enjoy living in Clover because tax rates are a little cheaper down here."

From suburban streets to rural lots

Homes in Clover range from early-1900s bungalows to new contemporary builds. The town center is characterized by classic suburban living — uniform lots, streets lined with sidewalks and green lawns that turn into wooded backyards. Prices in these neighborhoods range from $400,000 for three bedrooms to $600,000 for four bedrooms. Along more rural streets, brick and clapboard ranch styles go for $300,000, and lots have more space between them. Just outside the town center, houses come with an acre or more. Several newly built luxury homes also dot the surrounding Clover area and get up to $800,000 for 5-acre lots or $1 million for 20 acres.

Top-rated schools with small class sizes

Schools are a big draw to the area, as the Clover School District is ranked third in South Carolina by Niche. Many kids start at Larne Elementary School, which receives an A-minus rating. Then, it's off to Clover Middle School, which has a student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1. Clover High School has a 10/10 college readiness score from GreatSchools because of its dual enrollment opportunities with York Technical College and Winthrop University. The high school also has an Applied Technology Center offering unique courses in fields like engineering, agriculture and sports medicine. Both Clover Middle and Clover High receive an A rating from Niche.

Outdoor concerts and community sports

New Centre Park is the largest park in Clover, spanning 50 acres and offering an outdoor amphitheater, seasonal splash pad, soccer fields and walking trails. The park also includes restrooms and a concession stand, making it a popular spot for community events. Roosevelt Park and Clover Community Park also have restrooms and concession stands but are used more commonly by sports teams. "Clover is known for its adult sports programs," Childers says. "The Parks and Recreation department really cares about providing events for both kids and adults." Fourteen miles from the town center, King's Mountain National Military Park and King's Mountain State Park offer outdoor fun with a Revolutionary War historical backdrop. And residents enjoy heading to Wylie Lake, 9 miles east of the town center, which is primarily a boating and fishing lake that can get quite crowded during the summer.

Along Clover's main street

There's a selection of local eateries in downtown Clover. Clover Donuts is a popular spot to get freshly baked pastries, but stop by early because the donuts tend to sell out fast. For more sweet treats, the Carolina Chocolate Company is known for hand-crafted chocolate items and ice cream. At the heart of town, Victoria's Diner and Clover Station Southern Restaurant are two locally-owned options for southern comfort food. Residents stock up on groceries at Piggly Wiggly and Food Lion, and for fresh seafood, Saltwater Markets is a local favorite with a wide selection. Clover has several antique stores, but residents head 9 miles over to the Lake Wylie area for big box stores like Walmart.

Celebrate Saint Patrick's Day and more

Clover's biggest celebration is, aptly, the St Patrick's Day Festival, which brings in 6,000 to 10,000 people for a weekend of live music, carnival rides and a 5k run. "Locals really get into the St Patrick's Day dog show," says Shawna Sas with Clover Parks and Recreation. "People dress up their dogs, and there are all sorts of categories — everyone loves the 'face only a mother could love' award." Another favorite spring event is the Butt's Cook-Off & Music Frenzy, a day of live music and competitive pork butt barbecuing. For smaller community events, the Clover Parks and Recreation plans monthly Food Truck Thursdays, holiday celebrations and summer movies at New Centre Park. Since 2007, Clover and the city of Larne in Northern Ireland have had a Sister Cities Agreement to promote cultural and commercial ties. One of the main events of this initiative is the Highland Games, a September festival in Clover that celebrates traditional Scotts-Irish games, art and food.

Driving into Charlotte for work or play

Charlotte is 30 miles away, a commute that can range from 45 minutes to two hours, depending on traffic. Residents tend to head north to connect with I-85 going into the city, which is often backed up during rush hour. But the drive can be worth it, as the big city offers a major airport, big employers and larger hospitals, as well as shopping malls and festivals.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
