A Quad Cities suburb with a small-town vibe
Coal deposits found in the 1850s may have brought settlers to Coal Valley, but now, residents move here for the small-town feel. The Village of Coal Valley lies just south of Rock River and 6 miles south of downtown Moline, making it a suburb of the Quad Cities. The metropolitan areas to the north “have no more places to expand, so growth is happening south and east into Coal Valley,” says local business owner and Realtor Pieter Hanson. Despite the gradual expansion, the Village of Coal Valley exudes an overall quiet charm, as most of the land is made up of single-family homes and rustic green space. “We are a safe community, with a big summer yard sale and an annual fair called Coal Valley Days,” says Hanson.
Two distinct residential subdivisions
The gridded landscape to the north of the neighborhood leads into a swirl of cul-de-sacs to the south. Homes in the north sit atop tidy, compact yards, whereas homes in the south have larger, sprawling lawns. Mature trees pepper the landscape, creating a red, orange and yellow gradient in the autumn. A typical Coal Valley property has a multi-car attached garage and at least three bedrooms. Architectural styles include split levels, contemporary Craftsman, Colonial Revival and ranch style. Homes in the north tend to sell for $90,000 to $200,000, whereas homes in the southern portion fetch a higher price, ranging from $100,000 to $350,000 on average.

Schools in Coal Valley and beyond
The Moline Unified School District No. 40 serves the residents of Coal Valley. Students can attend Bicentennial Elementary and Woodrow Wilson Middle School, both of which received a B-minus from Niche. Students can move on to Moline High School, which ranks No. 1 in Best Public High Schools in Rock Island County, scoring a B-plus overall on Niche. Moline High offers Business, Technical and Career programs with various elective classes to promote college and career readiness.
Bicentennial Elementary is within Coal Valley, but the middle and high schools require a short drive across Rock River into Moline.

Outdoor recreation abounds
Bordering Coal Valley to the east is Niabi Zoo, hosting over 600 animals within 40 acres of preserved woodland. Owned by the Rock Island County Forest Preserve District, the zoo serves as both an education and conservation center.
Local golfers can take their pick between the 18 holes at Indian Bluff Golf Course or Oakwood Country Club, while mini golfers can head to the Valley Falls Adventure Golf, located on West 1st Avenue.
Of the four neighborhood parks, Coal Valley City Park is the most frequented, according to Ryan Hamerlinck, Streets and Parks Superintendent. “There’s a lot of green space and plenty of shade,” says Hamerlinck. Amenities include courts for tennis, volleyball and basketball, a horseshoe pit, a playground, a reservable shelter, paved walking paths and a playground. “We are in the process of revamping the park with new playground equipment in the fall,” Hamerlinck adds.

Local dives and nearby shopping
Local dining spots include Mulligan’s Valley Pub and Coal Creek Inn, both owned by Hanson. Mulligan’s Valley Pub is a popular local watering hole featuring classic bar food, a golf simulator and a reservable party room. For a family-friendly dining experience, Coal Creek Inn is located on East 22nd Avenue. Those on the hunt for antiques may find something special at Cottage Antiques & Co or at Country Fair Mall. Being a small community, the Village of Coal Valley doesn’t have a local grocery store, so residents head about 3.5 miles north to Moline to shop at Fareway Meat and Grocery, SouthPark Mall and Rock River Plaza. As expansion continues, locals will enjoy more and more amenities within the neighborhood. “We’re getting a Fareway, hopefully by 2026, right on the main drag of Route 6 and 1st Street,” says Hamerlinck.

Transportation around Coal Valley and its limited walkability
Bordered by U.S. Route 6 and Interstate 280 to the north, Coal Valley residents have access to major thoroughfares that connect the community to the Quad Cities. Though Coal Valley has some sidewalks and bike lanes, the area is largely car-dependent and without public transportation.

Coal Valley Days and the annual yard sale
Residents gather every year for Coal Valley Days, an annual fair that includes car shows, a petting zoo, fireworks, and a parade. The Annual Coal Valley Community Garage and Yard Sale is another event that attracts many participants and cultivates a sense of community.

Homes in the northwest portion of Coal Valley may experience noise from Quad Cities International Airport's main east-west runway, located just across Hiawatha Pioneer Trail.
