Garden District
Local flavors in the Garden District
Sherman Avenue to the south and Fourth Street to the west offer plenty of shopping and dining opportunities for Garden District residents. Midtown Bluebird is a cozy, wood-paneled restaurant on Fourth Street serving local meat and seafood dishes. Next door, Jeremiah Johnson Brewing Company is a local outpost of a Montana brewer, which fills up with tourists during the summer but is kept busy by locals throughout the year. The brewery also has a food menu that includes its signature brisket sandwich. Just across the street, Panhandle Cone and Coffee serves popular Northwest ice cream flavors like Buttermilk Huckleberry in a bright café with plenty of outdoor seating. Jones says that community spirit plays a big part in the quality of food and service at local restaurants. “There’s a lot of pride here in making sure the food’s good and the service is good. I’ve traveled recently, and I’ve just been like, ‘Oh my gosh, I just want to go back home.’ Everybody’s really proud of living here and wants to impress people,” she says. Pilgrim's Market, also on Fourth Street, is a locally owned grocery store that has a wide range of organic and natural food items and an extensive selection of local craft beer. There's also a Safeway for more grocery items. Sherman Avenue is home to many more local businesses, including Lakeside Harvest Foods and gift shops selling locally made art and décor, like Magpie and Mix It Up.Established and remodeled homes on tree-lined streets
The Garden District is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Coeur d'Alene, and many homes are over a century old. The tree-lined streets feature bungalows, Craftsmans and Dutch Colonial houses. The homes often have spacious front porches where residents can set up outdoor furniture or grow potted plants. Several of the older homes in the neighborhood have been renovated, adding new flooring, appliances and bathrooms. Houses are close together in a suburban setting, allowing neighbors to easily get to know one another and leading to impromptu neighborhood wine and cheese parties. The home prices in the Garden District vary depending on size, with houses under 2,000 square feet costing between $500,00 and $800,000, while those above 2,000 square feet can cost between $1 million and $1.3 million.Plenty of activity at Coeur d'Alene city parks
G.O. Phippeny Park is a neighborhood green space on Seventh Street, which on any given day is full of kids playing on the playground and adults working remotely from the park's gazebo beneath the ponderosa pines. The park also has a basketball court and open space beneath the trees where kids can run around. McEuen Park is one of the largest parks in Coeur d'Alene, just south of the neighborhood. This 22-acre green space has tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds and walking trails, all of which are full on summer evenings. The park is adjacent to Tubbs Hill, a large natural area that juts into Lake Coeur d'Alene and has miles of hiking trails. The tall rocks on the water's edge are an ideal spot for sunbathing or a thrilling jump into the lake.Convenient commutes to local schools
Students in the Garden District might attend Bryan Elementary School, rated an A-minus by Niche, and Lakes Middle School, rated a B. Both schools are conveniently located just a few blocks from the neighborhood. Coeur d'Alene High School receives a B grade. Its athletic programs maintain a spirited, crosstown rivalry with Lake City High School. Students can take dual enrollment courses through North Idaho College and the University of Idaho.Local events just steps from the neighborhood
The Garden District's location near downtown Coeur d'Alene allows easy access to local events, like the Fifth Street Farmers Market. This weekly market is held every Wednesday from May through September and features local vendors selling fresh farm products and artisan foods. Customers who come hungry can stroll along the street, browsing the stands cooking fresh paella or grilling juicy burgers. Downtown also hosts the annual Street Fair along Sherman Avenue. This three-day event in early August has over 250 vendors selling food, art, clothing and more and is free to attend each year.Walk, drive or ride through downtown Coeur d'Alene
With its proximity to downtown and existing sidewalks, the Garden District is a walkable neighborhood that allows residents to get to nearby destinations without a car. For those who prefer to drive, the numbered streets in the neighborhood are north-to-south thoroughfares throughout the city. Interstate 90 is about 1.5 miles north, offering an east-to-west route through North Idaho and a 33-mile drive to Spokane. Route A of the Citylink bus system has stops along Lakeside Avenue and Fourth Street, giving residents public transit access to the Spokane River District and downtown neighborhoods.
