Local flavors in the Garden District
Sherman Avenue to the south and Fourth Street to the west offer plenty of shopping and dining opportunities for Garden District residents. Midtown Bluebird is a cozy, wood-paneled restaurant on Fourth Street serving local meat and seafood dishes. Next door, Jeremiah Johnson Brewing Company is a local outpost of a Montana brewer, which fills up with tourists during the summer but is kept busy by locals throughout the year. The brewery also has a food menu that includes its signature brisket sandwich. Just across the street, Panhandle Cone and Coffee serves popular Northwest ice cream flavors like Buttermilk Huckleberry in a bright café with plenty of outdoor seating. Jones says that community spirit plays a big part in the quality of food and service at local restaurants. “There’s a lot of pride here in making sure the food’s good and the service is good. I’ve traveled recently, and I’ve just been like, ‘Oh my gosh, I just want to go back home.’ Everybody’s really proud of living here and wants to impress people,” she says. Pilgrim's Market, also on Fourth Street, is a locally owned grocery store that has a wide range of organic and natural food items and an extensive selection of local craft beer. There's also a Safeway for more grocery items. Sherman Avenue is home to many more local businesses, including Lakeside Harvest Foods and gift shops selling locally made art and décor, like Magpie and Mix It Up.
