Quiet streets near downtown and recreation in Northeast Coeur d'Alene

Despite being close to both the bustling downtown and Interstate 90, Northeast Coeur d’Alene offers a quiet lifestyle in this North Idaho resort town. “This is your quintessential, idyllic small-town living. You’re within walking distance from downtown, but you don’t have the noise from downtown,” says Brenda Burk, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Schneidmiller Realty who has over 20 years of experience. “You can jump on the interstate, but you don’t get any noise from that either, which is amazing.” The neighborhood gives residents easy access to the locally owned shops and restaurants along Fourth Street and Sherman Avenue. Outdoor activity is abundant, with Lake Coeur d’Alene, golf courses and city parks all within quick reach.

Sidewalks and shade trees add charm to a more affordable area

Vintage bungalows and Craftsman homes line the neighborhood streets, often sitting next to new construction contemporary houses. Tall, leafy trees dot the landscape, adding shade and a natural feeling to the community. Many streets have sidewalks, providing walkability throughout the neighborhood. Northeast Coeur d’Alene is slightly more affordable than adjacent neighborhoods. “You get a little more bang for your buck than if you were two or three streets away in the Garden District,” Burk says. Most homes cost between $290,000 and $680,000. Some new construction houses sell for $950,000 to $1.2 million.

Eclectic mix of shops and restaurants lining nearby streets

Downtown Coeur d’Alene has over 100 locally owned shops and restaurants, mostly centered along Sherman Avenue. “Crafted is a restaurant that appeals to a wide audience. It’s got good outdoor seating and a really good vibe,” Burk says. “We have sushi and Japanese restaurants. Another favorite is Sweet Lou’s.” Sweet Lou’s Restaurant & Tap House serves upscale American fare from a spot overlooking McEuen Park and Lake Coeur d’Alene. Gift shops and art galleries are tucked in amongst the eateries of downtown. Fourth Street is the place to shop for groceries, with a Safeway, Trader Joe’s and the locally owned Pilgrim’s Market. Retail stores north of the neighborhood include Costco and Target.

Outdoor recreation includes beaches, boat rentals and ski resorts

Lake Coeur d’Alene is one of the biggest recreational draws in the city, and neighborhood residents are not far from the water. Sanders Beach is a public spot for swimming or launching kayaks on the lake. The Boardwalk Marina offers boat rentals, including pontoons, sport boats and paddle boards. Hikers can explore the 165-acre Tubbs Hill with a 2.2-mile trail and sweeping lake views. Green spaces in the neighborhood include Bryan Park and Person Field, each with sports fields and playgrounds. More recreation is available farther outside of the city. “We have 13 golf courses within a half-hour, and we have three major mountains for skiing in the winter,” Burk says. “Silver Mountain has one of the world’s longest gondolas, and a lot of the younger snowboarders go there.”

Weekly and annual events bring energy to the community

The 5th Street Farmers Market is held every Wednesday from May through September. Visitors can shop for regionally sourced produce, flowers, arts and crafts. Other downtown events include the Brewfest beer festival in July and the Street Fair in August, which features more than 250 vendors.

Neighborhood schools earn A-minus and B ratings

Bryan Elementary School, located on Harrison Avenue, earns an A-minus from Niche. Lakes Middle School and Coeur d’Alene High School each receive a B. The high school offers several AP and honors courses in topics like biology, chemistry, English and physics. Seniors at the school complete an extensive project prior to graduation that includes a research paper and presentation.

Walkable streets and bus routes connect to downtown and beyond

The neighborhood's sidewalks and grid layout make it a walkable community, with downtown just over 1 mile away from the center. The A Route of the Citylink bus system serves Sherman Avenue and Fourth Street. Interstate 90 provides a highway across North Idaho and into Washington, leading about 34 miles west to Spokane. Health Care is available close by at Kootenai Health.
