Horseback riding at Silver Knolls

Nonstop trails and grassy green spaces make Cold Springs an ideal community for those who enjoy the outdoors. Silver Knolls Park is an equestrian expert’s dream as it houses horseback riding, hiking trails, a horse arena, youth sports fields and an open multipurpose green space. More soccer fields are found at the 13-acre Village Center Park, along with playgrounds, picnic areas and walking paths. White Lake sits right in the neighborhood along US Route 395, with Silver Lake just across North Red Rock Road in Stead. Both are favorite fishing spots for avid anglers in the area.

New homes at a nice price

Calm and quiet fill the air around Cold Springs, as comfortable homes with well-maintained lawns and yards line the streets. New home developments fill hilltop cul-de-sacs, featuring a variety of styles that include modern colonial style, single-story traditional and contemporary. Since older homes aren’t bound to HOA guidelines, a little flare gets flashed in custom decorative gates and private entrances to show off the owners’ creativity, especially during the holiday season. “As you’re going out to the North Valleys, you have Sun Valley, Golden Valley, Lemmon Valley, and you also have Stead and Cold Springs,” says Brian Lessinger, Realtor and President of The Lessinger Team under RE/MAX GOLD. “People move to the North Valleys because they’re cost-effective. Cold Springs and Stead have had a lot of new construction over the last 20 years, so you can get an inexpensive, relatively new house in those areas.” Lessinger also purchased his very first home in the North Valleys in the early 1990s. Prices in the area generally range from the $200,000s to the $600,000s, with newer homes starting around the $300,000 and $400,000 range.

New schools appeal to growing families

Served by the Washoe County School District, students can attend Silver Lake Elementary School and Cold Springs Middle School to prepare for studies at North Valleys High School. Highways say hi to California

Nevada Route 161 is the northern border of the community, while US Route 395 is the southern border, leading residents directly to California to the west and Stead to the east. Locations like White Lake, the Sierra Nevada Zoological Park and Sierra Sage Golf Course can be found along 395, and the Reno-Stead Airport is just a short drive away for frequent fliers.

Former home of Hobbs the Liger

In nearby Raleigh Heights, the famous Sierra Nevada Zoological Park sits at the Stead-Raleigh Heights border along US Route 395. As a sanctuary for exotic, endangered animals, the zoo’s most famous resident was Hobbs the liger, whose time at the zoo put Sierra Nevada on the map. It also houses a petting zoo where children can interact with animals like llamas, alpacas, deer and sheep. The Sierra Nevada Zoo stays open year-round, hosting several events to celebrate various holidays and raise funds for its continued operation.
