Cole offers a quiet lifestyle and access to highly rated schools
Cole is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town about 35 miles south of Oklahoma City. In the 1800s, ranching and agriculture were primary industries for the rural community, which was initially founded on just 10 acres. Today, the nearest city, Blanchard, is about 10 miles away, and around 600 people call Cole home. However, more and more homebuyers are considering the area due to its access to highly rated Washington Public Schools. “It’s quiet and so small that all our addresses are Blanchard addresses,” says five-year resident Brandi Glover, a Realtor with Oklahoma Elite Realty Select. “But it’s got really great schools. That’s why we moved to the area.”
Cole has a small population of 638 people.

Top-notch schools in the Washington Public Schools district
Students in Cole head to Washington Elementary School and Blanchard Middle School, both of which receive a Niche grade of A-minus, followed by Washington High School, which receives a B-plus. As a remote rural town, Cole has no public parks. However, residents have plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy nature. Sharpshooters have a 20-mile drive to the range and hunting grounds at the Lexington Wildlife Management Area, which also features fishing ponds and hiking areas. Lake Thunderbird State Park, also about 20 miles away, offers two marinas and nine ramps where boaters can launch their watercraft. Hiking areas and mountain biking trails wind around the shoreline, and more than 200 campsites are available.

Commuting to larger towns near Cole
No major highways pass through Cole, which can translate into long commutes. Most residents work in nearby towns, with some traveling as far as Oklahoma City. Norman is about 16 miles away and home to the University of Oklahoma and Norman Regional Hospital, the nearest major medical center. Oklahoma State Highway 74B, Cole’s primary thoroughfare, connects to Highway 76 for the 8-mile ride to Blanchard. Will Rogers International Airport, the state’s largest, is 25 miles away.

Shopping and dining in nearby Blanchard and Goldsby
Cole residents have to venture outside the town limits to find stores and restaurants. The closest grocery option is Spencer’s, roughly 8 miles away in Blanchard. Just down the street from Spencer’s is an Ace Hardware store that stocks household tools, home décor and gardening supplies. Libby’s Café in Goldsby, also about 8 miles away, is a local favorite dishing up American classics like chicken fried steak, fried catfish and juicy ribeye steaks. More dining and drinking options are available in Norman, about 16 miles north.

Building storm shelters in Tornado Alley
Like much of Oklahoma, Cole is in Tornado Alley. A major tornado struck in April 2023. “No one talked about Cole until about two years ago, when we got hit with the tornado,” Glover says. Although there hasn’t been any significant twister activity since, residents should prepare for frequent storm warnings. “Very few of our homes have basements,” Glover says. “Some do have storm shelters, but if they don’t, storm shelters are pretty cheap, and a lot of the time, you can get a rebate on them.” Residents must register for Oklahoma’s SoonerSafe program to qualify for the rebates, which cap off at $3,000 and may not exceed 75 percent of the shelter’s total cost.
