Established and well-loved community near Texas A&M
One of College Station's original neighborhoods, Eastgate's history is intertwined with Texas A&M University. Some of the neighborhood's quiet, tree-lined streets still bear the names the early university professors who lived there. Staff and students still enjoy a short walk to the university. But the community also includes realtors, plumbers, scientists, writers, electricians and more, according to Suzanne Droleskey, a resident since 1989. Many residents like Droleskey have been loyal to the neighborhood for decades. "We couldn't find any other neighborhood that has the same feeling of a long-established, well-loved green space with all these older trees and this interesting mix of homes and people," she says. "So we decided to rebuild here."
Unique home styles on large, wooded lots
Eastgate has a diverse architectural landscape of ranch, Cape Cod and cottage homes, among other styles. The community's character also comes from the large, wooded lots. It was first platted in the 1940s, and development boomed here after WWII. Many home interiors have been updated since then. New construction has also filled in where older homes couldn't be repaired. "One of the best things is that because of their age, even if a lot of houses were built by the same builder, with all of the modifications and redevelopment it seems like every house is different," says Joel Cantrell, longtime resident and neighborhood association president. Prices typically range from about $250,000 to about $650,000. Apartments and townhouses offer rental opportunities, but residents aim to preserve owner-occupancy. Several subdivisions here have deed restrictions limiting the number of unrelated occupants per home.
Eastgate’s homes reflect decades of architectural variety, with Cape Cods as standout gems.
Eastgate is known for charming cottage-style homes with cozy porches and vintage details.

Each earns an A grade. The high school boys' and girls' cross country teams have earned multiple state championship titles. Walking trails and woodland
Green space is a defining Eastgate feature, with several parks inside the neighborhood. Thomas Park is one of the largest and oldest. This long and narrow park has a walking trail around the perimeter. "It's where everybody goes to walk their dog," Cantrell says. The Schob Nature Preserve doubles as a classroom, hosting elementary school field trips and university research. The 7-acre space includes wandering trails and lush foliage. The Kiwanis Nature Trail also weaves through woods and water features.

Fourth of July potluck and other cherished traditions
The neighborhood association helps keep annual traditions alive. The Fourth of July celebration features a breakfast potluck and a cherry seed spitting contest. "You can run up to the line and spit, stand and spit—whatever manner you want to spit the seed; you just can't cross over the line," Cantrell says. The traditions also include a neighborhood yard sale and National Night Out.
Culture of walking in Eastgate
Residents often get around on foot or by bike. Sidewalks line the main streets, and the area does not get much through traffic, according to Droleskey. Walton Drive features a bike lane leading into the university. "You'll see walkers, joggers, people with their dogs, people riding their bikes to school with their kids," says Droleskey, who rides her bike to her teaching job on campus. The Baylor Scott & White Clinic is also within easy reach for medical appointments.
