The city kicks off autumn with the annual Labor Day Lift Off, which is the largest hot air balloon festival in Colorado. Drive north along Academy Boulevard for WhirlyBall Colorado Springs, an entertainment venue featuring laser tag, bowling lanes and WhirlyBall, a sports game that combines lacrosse, hockey and basketball skills while riding in bumper cars. Shop for groceries at Safeway, or go to a nearby big-box retailer such as Target and Walmart. Area primary centers include Queen Palmer Elementary School, which has a C Niche rating, and the C-minus Twain Elementary School, which offers after-school enrichment programs to students whose parents have extended work hours. Galileo Middle School, also known as the Galileo School of Math and Science, utilizes the nationally recognized curriculum Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and scores a C. Galileo also has a greenhouse and garden beds, and the cafeteria cooks with produce that is grown from the school’s garden. Sabin Middle School, which rates B-minus, offers a Gifted Magnet Program. Prospective high schools include Palmer High School, which rates a C, and Mitchell High School is ranked B-minus.
