Historic Colorado Springs neighborhood
The Old North End neighborhood, or ONEN as some locals like to call it, has a history that dates back to the end of the 1800s when the Colorado Springs area saw much of its population growth, and is something that is still coveted to this day. The neighborhood is known for its rows of historic Victorian, Mediterranean and other historic homes that line many of the sidewalk-lined streets, but it also has a strong sense of community. The neighborhood was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and by History Colorado. “The Old North End has one of the largest historical preservations west of the Mississippi,” says Dutch Schulz of the Old North End Neighborhood Association. “It’s known for the houses with stately architecture, and many of them were built during the economic boom from the Cripple Creek gold rush.”
Community closeness
New residents can meet their neighbors at one of the many events held in the community throughout the year. The ONEN Social Committee hosts annual events, from an Easter Egg Hunt and 4th of July parade to a cookie exchange where residents can show off their baking skills. ONEN Fest takes place during the fall season, bringing neighbors together for a huge block party filled with games, lively music and a potluck.
Stately, historic homes
Homes throughout the Old North End are known throughout Colorado Springs, mainly for the historic nature of many of the houses. Stately Victorian homes built at the turn of the 1900s give quiet residential streets a regal appeal, typically priced from $600,000 up to $2.2 million. There’s an array of housing options throughout the area, including cozy 2 bedroom bungalows in the 500s to renovated properties and townhomes. “I’ve lived here since 1985,” says Schulz. “Many others have lived here for just as long, but I’ve also seen several families move in and out over the years.”
