Homes from several decades in the hills
Older homes neighbor newer ones in The Mesa. Properties in the west sit further apart higher up in the hills, and houses in the east are aligned on gridded asphalt streets. But both areas have clear views of the snow-capped Rocky Mountain range. Early 21st-century condos and townhomes with stone and vinyl exteriors are gathered near the northeastern corner. These properties have small wooden decks and short entryways connecting to well-paved sidewalks, and some are within walking distance of Pike Park. Prices can range between $250,000 for a two-bedroom home and $650,000 for a five-bedroom one. Residents can expect to pay between $250 and $300 in monthly HOA fees, which cover trash removal and lawn maintenance. There’s a wide range of pricing for single-family homes here. A combination of early 20th-century wooden cottages and midcentury ranch-style homes are mostly dispersed throughout the north and south end. These houses are suited with open, front porches and fenced-in grassy yards. Prices for these roughly range between $270,000 and $500,000. Most houses on the west side have more square footage and larger lots. It’s normal to see backyard pools and farm equipment in the ponderosa pine tree-filled yards. Home styles include midcentury ranch and multi-story modern traditional, some built in the late 20th century and some in the 2020s. These are priced from $650,000 to $1.1 million, with massive estates surpassing $2 million.
Hiking and birdwatching in The Mesa
The 97-acre Sondermann Park features plenty of open space for birdwatching and hiking. The tree-covered Mesa Valley Trail extends from the park through the northern part of the neighborhood and offers stunning views of the tan and green Pikes Peak Mountain on its narrow, rocky path. The Catamount Institute, a local non-profit, partners with the park to provide a nature center, camps and tours for kids. Set north in the community, Pike Park has a playground and baseball diamond next to the Academy for Advanced and Creating Learning. The iconic Garden of the Gods is about 4 miles west and has guided horseback riding, several areas for rock climbing and 15 miles of trails that segway through the well-known red sandstone formations. Residents can also travel to the other side of Interstate 25 to play volleyball and pickleball and bike along the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail in Monument Valley Park.Artsy clubs at Coronado High
The area is zoned for the Colorado Springs Schools District 11 school district. Neighborhood kids can begin at Bristol Elementary, rated an overall A-minus from Niche. Holmes Middle School is rated a B, and Coronado High earns a B-plus. The school offers tons of student organizations like Open Mic Club, where kids recite their own poems, and Origami Club, a low-maintenance group that fellowships and makes art together.Celebrating Wild West culture at Territory Days
The Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center holds a variety of events throughout the year, including painting sessions led by local artists and regular guided nature walks. In October, cyclists take advantage of Motorless Morning at the park, where motor vehicles aren’t allowed on the winding roadways. Residents head to Old Colorado City just south of the neighborhood for Territory Days in October. Visitors dress up as pioneers and saunter through the streets, listening to live music, checking out food vendors and participating in gunfight re-enactments to replicate when the city was founded.Easy access to other parts of the city via Interstate 25
Interstate 25 runs along the eastern border of The Mesa, connecting folks across Colorado Springs to Denver, 70 miles north. Downtown Colorado Springs is less than 3 miles southeast via Mesa Road. The area is mostly car-dependent, but parts of Mesa Road and North Chestnut Street have bike lanes. Mountain Metro Transit buses also stop near the eastern half of the community. CommonSpirit Penrose Hospital is 3 miles west, and Colorado Springs Airport is southeast via I-25.Thrifting at Uintah Gardens Shopping Center
For groceries, folks can access King Soopers near the north border or browse through produce at the Old Colorado City Farmers Market, which runs from June to October. The nearby Uintah Gardens Shopping Center has multiple retailers like Five Below and Big 5 Sporting Goods. Shoppers can sort through hand-me-down furniture and home décor at Arc Thrift Store, one of Colorado’s largest employers of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For more of a mom-and-pop shopping experience, Old Colorado City has loads of options. Eclectic CO sells trendy clothing items and quirky knick-knacks, and Leechpit Records and Vintage has stacks of old music records and other collectibles. Old Town Plaza houses several eateries; La Baguette bakes fresh bread and sweets daily and serves French onion soup. Slice 420 is a local pub serving New York-style pizza with rotating weekly specials.Protecting against fires and loud noises
Homes in The Mesa might be susceptible to wildfires, especially during peak season from May to September. The Colorado Springs Fire Department Station #1 is about 3 miles southeast via Uintah Street. The department advises homeowners to harden their yards with rock gardens and barriers and clear their areas of leaves and other flammable debris. Those living closer to I-25 may experience some noise during high traffic, but an existing sound wall keeps most sounds at bay.
