Tight-knit village centered around small lake
An equal blend of the natural, the commercial and the communal can be found in the village of Owen Brown. Established in 1973, it was the fifth of ten villages to be developed in the greater master-planned community of Columbia. Each comprises homes, a village center and a variety of parks and athletic fields, with more than 95 miles of pathways connecting residents to everyday essentials and each other. “What separates us from the other villages is we have the largest lake in the Columbia area, Lake Elkhorn," says Craig Barton, manager of the Owen Brown Community Association. "It’s a nice area with pathways all around it, so it’s a good setting for a walk.”

Established homes along sidewalk-lined streets
Colonials, Cape Cods and split-levels are just some of the options throughout the neighborhood. “Most of the homes were built in the early 1970s,” Barton says. “People enjoy the established feel.” Yards are spacious, and neighbors passing by on the sidewalk-lined streets will likely spot people tending to their yards and gardens. Mature trees have also been planted throughout the area, giving it a cozy and secluded feel. Small driveways and one- to two-car garages are also common, adding a touch of privacy and convenience. Prices range from $425,000 to $750,000, depending on the number of bedrooms. “Other than Columbia’s largest village, Long Reach, Owen Brown has the largest number of townhouses in Columbia,” Barton says. Those properties are typically listed in the $400,000s.

Laps around Lake Elkhorn
Owen Brown’s crown jewel is Lake Elkhorn, a 37-acre reservoir. Locals wave hello as they pass each other along a 2-mile hiking loop circling the waterway. People also spot wildlife, like the native blue heron, along the way. Fishing piers and boardwalks jut out onto the waterway, and there is a little red picnic pagoda where residents can relax. Neighbors can connect at group classes at the village’s Supreme Sports Club. The indoor fitness facility also features workout equipment, a roller-skating rink, basketball courts and an 8-lane lap pool. Come summertime, the village’s two outdoor pools open to offer additional spots for a swim. One is along Rustling Leaf, while the other is beside the Owen Brown Community Center. The village also features its own tennis club, with ten outdoor hard courts and six pickleball courts within walking distance for residents.

The complex also houses an auto repair shop, hair salon, ATMs and casual eateries. Situated on the village’s southern end is Columbia Marketplace, with nearly a dozen restaurants with an international flair. Pick up a pizza from HomeSlyce or order authentic Korean dishes to-go from K-Manna Fusion. Locals also frequent Cazbar for Turkish cuisine, while Chutney is a go-to spot for Indian food. At the heart of the master-planned community is The Mall in Columbia, an expansive 200+ retail shopping complex, complete with a food court and movie theater. Locals can peruse the racks at stores like lululemon, Express and Nordstrom. The shopping center is surrounded by a mix of chain and local restaurants, including The Cheesecake Factory, Sushi Sono and Cured 18th and 21st – a small bistro with the vibe of a speakeasy, where live jazz is frequently played.

The site still hosts concerts throughout the summer and around the holidays, features the Symphony of Lights.
