East Campus
College rentals and more
In East Campus, homes reflect everything from Cape Cod to Foursquare designs; and ranch-style homes, bungalows and Colonial Revivals are also prominent in the community. Most of these homes were built between the early 1900s and the ‘60s and range in price from $300,000 to upwards of $500,000. Most homes here sell after an average of 5 days on the market, which is much faster than the national average of 44 days. Over the years, and as the university has grown, a number of these houses have also been converted into apartments or have become college rental properties. “Some parents will even invest in a property for their children and then go ahead and sell it when they graduate,” says local Realtor Shawna Neuner with Boulevard Realty. “There’s a heavy turnover at the end and the beginning of the school year.” Homes typically sit on modest lots, flanking sidewalk-lined streets on which many residents park. "Off-street parking and trash collection are also important things to consider. Since not all properties are eligible for dumpsters,” Neuner adds.Nearby eateries: The Broadway Diner and Shakespeare’s Pizza
Mizzou students and longtime Columbia residents have been coming to the Broadway Diner for more than half a century. Inside, red and white checkered flooring, red barstools and teal-colored tables transport them back to 1967, when the diner was first opened. The establishment still serves classic entrees ranging from pancakes to burgers and other diner foods. Unique to the restaurant is ‘The Stretch,’ a dish that comes with chili, eggs and hashbrowns, and borrows its name and recipe from Kathy Hauswirth, a Broadway Diner regular from the ‘70s who was nicknamed ‘Stretch’ by her father. Nearby, Shakespeare’s Pizza serves pizza by the slice and has become a go-to spot for current students and alums alike. “In 2015, the owners of the property decided they wanted to build apartments, so we had to tear our building down and rebuild it,” says Toby Epstein, Shakespeare’s general manager. “We paid students to knock mortar off bricks so that we could reuse them and ended up keeping 23,000 of them from the original building. It seemed very important to us because the building is so much a part of Columbia.” For groceries, Hy-Vee and Aldi are both about 2 miles away.Clyde Wilson Park, MizzouRec and Stephens Lake Park
On the south side of East Campus, Clyde Wilson Park spans nearly 10 acres and features a natural trail that stretches for about a mile, meandering past small streams and through maple and walnut trees. To the west, it's not uncommon to find students laying out their picnic blankets in the university's green spaces, like Kuhlman Court, where they'll spend time reading or enjoying lunch. Nearby, MizzouRec offers fitness classes and gym facilities for those affiliated with the university as well as residents of Boone County who opt to purchase memberships. The easternmost corner of the community boasts access to the multiuse Hinkson Creek Trail, a go-to option among bikers and joggers alike. It connects to Stephens Lake Park, which spans 116 acres. “It’s all acreage related to passive recreation,” says Columbia Parks and Recreation Director Gabe Huffington, pointing to the three playgrounds, swimming lake and walking trails as some of the park’s most frequented spots. “It has turned into a gem of our park system. There’s nothing else like it in the city.”Events at Stephens Lake Park and Mizzou football games
Stephens Lake Park hosts several events throughout the year, ranging from a 5k run to Fire in the Sky each Fourth of July. The latter includes everything from live music to a fireworks show. However, the most popular events with East Campus residents are the Mizzou football games. Like many others who grew up in Columbia, “I’ve been going to home games since I was two years old,” McConachie says. “It’s one of my favorite things to do.” In October, the university and the surrounding communities gear up for homecoming. “Mizzou invented homecoming, so it’s a big deal here,” McConachie says. "We have a huge parade, and there are events leading up to it all week.”Walking or biking to The District, University of Missouri and more
Accessible by car, on foot or by bike, The District is less than a mile northwest via South College Avenue and East Broadway. It's also about a 5-minute ride on Go COMO’s Green Route by bus. Higher learning institutions are even closer to the neighborhood—Mizzou is just outside the community’s western edge; Stephens College is about half a mile away via South College Avenue; and Columbia College is just over a mile away via South College Avenue. Boone Hospital Center is just north, while MU Health Care is about a mile away via South College Avenue. For other commutes, Interstate 70 is to the north, while U.S. Route 63 is 4 miles to the east. The latter offers connections to the state’s capital, Jefferson City, about 30 miles south. It is also the route most take to the Columbia Regional Airport, nearly 13 miles south. An artistic elementary and other public schools
Children can enroll in Columbia Public Schools like Locust Street Expressive Arts Elementary School, which operates through a lottery system and receives a B-rating from Niche. The school integrates art lessons into the curriculum, and in the past has included courses like embroidery or clay lessons. The school also hosts a Halloween parade each year. In 2023, each grade had a different theme, ranging from sculptures to paintings. From there, students often head to A-minus-rated Jefferson Middle, a lottery-based STEAM school that Niche ranks as the area’s No. 3 public middle school. Every year, students can take four electives ranging from ‘Apocalyptic Survival,’ to ‘Musical Theatre Production.’ Then it’s on to A-minus-rated Hickman High, home to electives like ‘Agricultural Mechanics and Welding Technology’ and ‘Sport and Performance Psychology.’
