A suburban neighborhood just 5 miles north of downtown Columbia

The Hominy Branch community gets its name from the creek that winds along the neighborhood's southern border. Known for its relaxed Midwestern essence, this neighborhood features spacious, wooded backyards, sidewalks and the multiuse Hominy Creek Trail. Many homes here were built in the early 2000s, and compared to the newer communities on the south side of the city, sell at lower prices and don't have added HOA fees. "The northeast area of Columbia is more affordable than the south side. It also feels a little bit more rural," says local Realtor Dalton Rice with House of Brokers Realty. "There aren't as many shops or restaurants, but we're starting to experience that growth. The area has recently gotten a new Shnucks location." With growth on the horizon and a number of nearby amenities, the Hominy Branch neighborhood offers laid-back Missouri living on the brink of change.

A 5-mile drive to The District, University of Missouri and more

Downtown Columbia — known as The District — is about a 20-minute bus ride away via Go COMO's Blue Route. However, most residents drive to the city center, about 5 miles away, via Clark Lane. This same road connects the community to major employers like the University of Missouri, MU Health Care and Boone Hospital Center, also about 5 miles away. The community's location is also convenient for those in the hospitality and industrial sectors, as there are hotels and manufacturing employers a few miles to the west, along Interstate 70. Just 3 miles west, U.S. Route 63 offers connections to the Columbia Regional Airport, 14 miles south, and to the state capital Jefferson City, 32 miles south.

George's Pizza and Steakhouse, Big Mama's Cafe

While most restaurants in north Columbia are chain eateries, there are some nearby local options, including George's Pizza and Steakhouse. Located about 2 miles from the community, this restaurant features daily specials and a Greek-inspired menu. Just 3 miles away, Big Mama's Cafe serves up everything from pancakes to make-your-own omelets. In 2023, the restaurant won the 'Best of Columbia' breakfast award. However, with a limited number of restaurants and shops on the northeast side of Columbia, Rice says many residents drive south to dine out. He recommends CC's City Broiler, the 2021 and 2022 winner of 'Best of Columbia' chef, wait staff and steak awards. "It has one of the greatest steaks I've ever had," Rice says. For groceries, the chain Shnucks is just about 2 miles away.
