Mexico Gravel
Midcentury single-family homes and duplexes
Many of Mexico Gravel’s properties sit on nearly an acre of land and flank narrow, tree-lined streets. Most were built between the '50s and the ‘70s, and reflect bi-level, split-level or ranch-style designs, complete with attached garages. However, a number of these homes have also been converted into duplexes. While many homes have been renovated, an equal number have retained their original interiors. “Investment properties are pretty common here,” Prevo says. And as such, “The neighborhood is increasing in value at a higher rate than other areas in Columbia.” Prices for duplexes typically range from $130,000 to $180,000, while single-family homes cost between $150,000 to upwards of $200,000. These ranges are significantly lower than the city’s median price of $305,000. Buyers should be aware that railroad tracks are to the west, which can cause higher-than-average Sound Scores.Columbia Public Schools
Students can enroll in Blue Ridge Elementary, which receives a C-minus rating from Niche. The school boasts connections with the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources. Through this partnership, students can learn more about native plants and agricultural practices by touring the university’s Bradford Research Farm. Then it's on to C-plus-rated Oakland Middle, which features equality, book and kindness clubs. From there, students may progress to B-rated Muriel Williams Battle High, known as Battle High. According to Niche, it’s ranked as the No. 3 high school in Boone County. The school also features electives like small engine technology and web design.Big Mama’s, the Broadway Diner and more
Mexico Gravel is home to the grocery store Gerbes and a number of retailers, many of which are furniture stores. For dining out, local Realtor Matthew McAdams with Hearth and Home Realty recommends Big Mama’s Cafe, which is just south of the community. “It’s always packed,” McAdams says. The establishment is known for its breakfast options, and Inside Columbia magazine honored it with the 'best of Columbia’ breakfast award in both 2022 and 2023. For a dinner of tacos and margaritas, McAdams suggests Delia’s Mexican Grill. The community is also not far from The District’s restaurants, where McAdams recommends the Broadway Diner. Built in the late 1960s, this establishment is one of the mail-to-order Valentine diners made and popularized in Wichita, Kansas. In 2024, Columbia’s Historic Preservation Commission recognized the diner as a ‘notable historic property.’Nearby Parks: Albert-Oakland Park and more
Mexico Gravel does not boast parks of its own, but Albert-Oakland Park is just under 2 miles away. Spanning nearly 80 acres, the park features the city’s largest public school, pickleball courts and a sand volleyball court. It also boasts access to the Bear Creek Trail, a go-to path among bikers and joggers alike. For other options, the over 100-acre Stephens Lake Park is just 3 miles south. The lake is open for swimming from May through September. It’s also stocked with catfish and blue gill for the avid fisherman. When the lake freezes over in the wintertime, it’s also open for ice fishing. Just 5 miles east, the 18-hole Lake of the Woods Golf Course features tree-lined fairways and water hazards. In May, the course hosts a three-person scramble, while in August, there’s the annual Night Flight Glow Ball Golf Tournament — known for its glow-in-the-dark golf balls. For other options, the Rock Bridge Memorial State Park’s hiking trails are just about 10 miles away.Commutes to The District, University of Missouri, Jefferson City and more
Bus stops on Go COMO’s Blue Route are just over a mile east. By bus, The District is about a 20-minute ride away. By car, the city center is just over 3 miles away via Paris Road. This road also offers connections to the University of Missouri and MU Health Care, which are a little over 3 miles away via Paris Road. For other commutes, U.S. Route 63 runs through the neighborhood, offering connections to The Columbia Regional Airport, which is 15 miles away, and to the state capital, Jefferson City, which is 33 miles away.
