Ranch-style homes, bi-level designs and more
Most homes were built between the '60s and the '80s, reflecting red brick bi-level, split-level and ranch-style designs. Newer construction includes two-story options, many with New Traditional or contemporary influences. Properties typically sit on just over a quarter of an acre and range in price from $300,000 to $550,000, depending on their size, age and location. Prospective residents should be aware that some homes receive higher-than-average Flood Factor Scores because of their street's typography or proximity to either County House Branch Creek or Hulen Lake. The neighborhood is also home to Cedarhurst of Columbia, an assisted living community.County House Trail and other green spaces
The County House Trail meanders through the community, offering biking and walking opportunities. It stretches 2 miles and connects to other green spaces within Columbia. "I see lots of people on the trail walking their dogs to the Twin Lakes Dog Park," says Taylor. The dog park is in the 73-acre Twin Lakes Recreation Area, which is also a popular option among joggers and anglers alike. Fairview Park is the go-to spot for sports, with everything from tennis courts to a disc golf course. Nearby, Mizzou's 18-hole A. L. Gustin Golf Course features practice opportunities and tournaments, including the Gateway PGA Mid-Missouri Championship. For hiking, Rock Bridge Memorial State Park's wooded trails and unique caving opportunities are less than seven miles away.Columbia Public Schools and Mizzou
Children can attend Fairview Elementary, which receives a B-plus rating on Niche. While a student at the elementary school, "I would walk or bike to Fairview," Taylor says. From there, children can attend B-plus-rated Smithton Middle, which features extracurriculars like volleyball and cross country. Then it's on to A-minus-rated David H. Hickman High. Here, some students enroll in the A+ Program, where they can receive tuition assistance for Missouri's community colleges and technical schools by maintaining a 2.5 GPA or higher, becoming a volunteer tutor and completing other requirements. For higher learning opportunities, there is the nearby Mizzou, which was the No. 8 college football team in 2023, according to ESPN.Mizzou football games and nearby events
During football season, Southwest Hills residents can put on their black and yellow attire before cheering on the Mizzou Tigers. However, to get to the city center, most residents take the 4-mile drive via East Stadium Boulevard and state Route 163. Major employers like Mizzou and MU Health Care are about 3 miles away via East Stadium Boulevard. This boulevard and U.S. Route 63 connect the community to the Columbia Regional Airport, which is nearly 15 miles away. Route 63 also offers connections to Jefferson City — Missouri's capital — which is 33 miles away.CC’s City Broiler, La Terraza Mexicana Grill and more
For dining out, there are nearby options like CC's City Broiler, a steakhouse that Inside Columbia magazine honored for having the city's 'best steak' and 'best chef' from 2020 through 2022. Just across the street, La Terraza Mexicana Grill offers tacos, margaritas and fajitas. For sandwiches and salads, Old Neighborhood Cafe features a deli-inspired menu, making it a hot spot for grab-and-go meals.
