Dentsville offers international cuisine and proximity to shopping districts
Partially lined by Decker Boulevard, the Dentsville neighborhood puts locals within minutes of Columbia’s international corridor – a thoroughfare lined with countless Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean and Mexican restaurants and markets. Alongside its diverse cuisine, the area is surrounded by numerous shopping districts, the University of South Carolina, several swaths of green spaces and expansive lakes. “I have noticed a lot of northern transplants like myself,” says Kathy Cobb, a Realtor with Keller Williams Palmetto since 2020. “I moved here from Boston, and it has the same amenities but with a smaller city feel. We northerners sometimes get a bad reputation for being cold, but it’s hard to be that way here where everyone’s friendly.” In addition to its prime location, which is only a short drive to Myrtle Beach and Asheville, and its charming college-town community, Columbia provides ample tax breaks for veterans and for those 65 years of age or older.

Ranch-style homes tucked away in Dentsville suburbia
The housing market in Dentsville is as diverse as its restaurants and markets. There are pockets of suburbia with ranch homes and split levels, often priced between $180,000 and $250,000, for homebuyers to choose from. New Traditional homes that are settled near the fairways of a country club or waterfront property can reach upwards of $450,000. “There is a wide appeal for a range of buyers in that area,” says Mary Lane Sloan, broker and owner of ART of Real Estate. “You’re close to Fort Jackson and Sesquicentennial State Park, where you can go hiking or camping. You also have the opportunity for in-town, private lake living on Springwood or Windsor Lake, unlike Lake Murray, where everyone has access.” Many homes also offer larger yards, with lots climbing up to a half-acre. Compared to Charleston or Charlotte, Columbia’s overall affordability is becoming common knowledge. Prices in Dentsville and the rest of the city’s northeast side are especially low. Homebuyers can get the most house for their dollar here, according to Cobb.

USC is only 9 miles away from Dentsville
Dentsville is a large portion of Northeast Columbia, so school zoning varies by location. Students attend one of four elementary schools, including Joseph Keels or Jackson Creek. The elementary schools share a B-minus on Niche. Dent Middle School holds a B Niche score. It offers extracurricular options, including a fine arts and media enrichment program or TWO Academies, where boys and girls attend separate classes for part of the day. Similar programs are available to students who later attend Richland Northeast High School, which also earns a B from Niche. The high school offers a convergence media magnet, allowing students to participate in the school newspaper, literary magazine or broadcast program. Higher education is also readily available to graduates in Dentsville as the University of South Carolina is only 9 miles southwest.

Dentsville is close to a state park, multiple pocket parks and within minutes of two rivers
The 1,400-acre Sesquicentennial State Park runs along the area’s eastern edge. Located at its center is a 30-acre lake, often rife with outdoor recreation like fishing, kayaking or canoeing. An evening can also be spent exploring the scenic nature trails framed by small creeks or biking around the park’s 6-mile loop. In the summer, kids can run around the splash pad and playgrounds, and campers can make reservations for one of the dozens of sites with water, fire rings and picnic tables. On the opposite side of Dentsville, just off Interstate 20, is Meadowlake Park. It’s popular among locals of all ages because of the playground, tennis and racquetball courts, baseball fields and fully lit walking track spanning more than a quarter mile. When the weather isn’t cooperating, there’s a community center on-site, housing a basketball court and weight room. Those who live near The Spur at Northwoods Golf Club tend to frequent Summerhill Park when they aren’t hitting the links. Though much smaller than the other two parks in the area, it does feature short walking paths, a basketball court and a playground. Along with several other lakes nearby, residents can also take advantage of several other lakes nearby or drive downtown to enjoy the views of the Congaree and Saluda rivers. Recent developments have provided a safer route for pedestrians that stretches from USC to the Riverfront and Riverwalk parks.

Residents are close to Columbia Place Mall and Decker Boulevard
Just off the Two Notch Road exit, there are a host of chain and local eateries close to Columbia Place Mall. “One of the things I love most about Columbia is all of the options you have to eat locally,” Cobb says. “We’ve all had enough of the outback steakhouses, and the food scene here is great in general.” Family-owned Harbor Inn Seafood has been operating beside the mall since 2002. The menu is the love child of the family’s Greek heritage and Mediterranean diet. Inakaya Japanese Restaurant is next door, a hot spot for raw seafood like sushi and sashimi. The Comedy House is a few miles down Decker Boulevard near Food Lion. The venue is well-known for its stand-up acts and celebrity-themed cabaret. Grocery staples can be purchased at the Food Lion on Two Notch Road or the other location on Decker Boulevard.

Soda City attracts Dentsville locals downtown
The most well-known event in Columbia is arguably Soda City. This farmers market closes down several downtown streets every Saturday and is welcome to humans and their four-legged friends. It’s located across from the Columbia Museum of Art and just a few blocks from EdVenture, one of the country’s top children’s museums. The Vista, a historic market beloved for its expansive art scene, isn’t a far walk away either. “It’s a great place for a date night since you can park and walk around,” Cobb says. Its cobblestone streets lead to several art galleries and performance centers. “I really enjoy the Columbia City Ballet, and then you have Broadway performances at the Koger Center for the Arts, too.”

Getting in and around Dentsville
Along with easy access to the international corridor, Dentsville is split by Interstates 20 and 77. Other major throughways include Trenholm Road, Decker Boulevard, Arcadia Lakes Drive and Two Notch Road. The entire northeast is experiencing a revitalization of roadways to stay ahead of the city’s continuous growth. Locals can drive to MUSC Health Columbia for immediate healthcare needs, roughly 3 miles northeast. Columbia Metropolitan Airport is 20 miles away; however, limited direct flights are available, so most drive about 88 miles via I-77 N to fly out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
