Secluded community dates back centuries
Earlewood is the type of place where neighbors know each other by name. The tight-knit historic community hosts “monthly porch parties, people can vote on the yard of the month, and the holidays are always a big deal,” says Emily Hammond, a Realtor with Realty One Group Reside, who has lived in Earlewood for more than a decade. “Halloween and Christmas, in particular, the neighbors go all out with decorations.” The thriving suburb with rich residential character and streets flanked by old-growth trees is just blocks from downtown Columbia, allowing locals to access the benefits of the city without the added clamor. “The surrounding area has seen massive growth, and the neighborhood has become extremely desirable for its fun, vibrant, friendly feel,” Hammond says.
Bungalow design has its roots in the architectural style of Bengal, India in the late 1800's.

Homes with rich character
The sidewalk-lined streets of Earlewood showcase craftsmanship dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. American Foursquares, farmhouses, ranch homes and bungalows are just some of the options in this eclectic neighborhood. Exterior features and design touches, like double-decker and arcaded porches get more distinct from one house to the next. Lot sizes are small in Earlewood, peppered with shrubbery and trees backed up against the houses. Hammond says, “Homes in Earlewood are quick to sell. If they’re on the market for four days, that’s a long time. People are always waiting to get into this neighborhood, and when a home goes on sale, there will be multiple offers within a day.” Most price points here range from $125,000 to $375,000, depending on the number of bedrooms and renovations. Larger modernized homes and duplexes can reach $500,000 to $715,000.

Historic namesake park and riverside trails
The development of the neighborhood’s housing was sparked by 66-acre Earlewood Park, the oldest and largest park in Columbia. Locals head here for walks along creekside trails or to play disc golf on the park’s 18-hole course. There are playgrounds for kids to roam, two tennis courts and an amphitheater for small concerts and events. It’s also an ideal spot for dog owners, who can let their pups run around off-leash in the NoMa Bark Park. There are two areas for small and large dogs, with water fountains and small kiddie pools. Near Earlewood’s eastern edge is an access point to the Three Rivers Greenway, which spans 15.5 miles along the Broad, Saluda and Congaree Rivers. Locals go for runs, bike rides and can skateboard along the lighted, paved trails. They’ll likely spot kayakers and tubers along the waterway as they go. Benches are also dotted along the pathway where people can stop and take in the waterfront views.
Quirky garden bar and classic Southern cuisine
Walkability is vital to Earlewood residents who enjoy the luxury of short strolls to local restaurants and attractions. Within a one-block stretch on Franklin Street, locals can enjoy Southern cuisine with a twist at The War Mount, head inside the Gardener’s Outpost Plant Shop for a drink at the quirky bar or hang out with friends at Capital City Cornhole. When the Columbia Fireflies are in town, venture less than 1.5 miles east to catch a baseball game at Segra Park. While many amenities are within walking distance, people will have to hop in their car for a grocery run. The closest big box store is the Publix on Gervais Street. Fair warning: the store’s small, busy parking lot can be tricky to navigate. There’s also a Food Lion on Harden Street in the Five Points district, about 3.5 miles away.

Shoppers can start at Earlewood Baptist Church and make their way through the yards in the neighborhood. When fall rolls around, locals fill up the stands at Earlewood Park’s amphitheater for EarleJam. Along with live music, people can enjoy each other’s company while eating food from restaurants and food trucks around the area.
Studying national defense at Columbia High School
Students attend Logan Elementary School, a pillar in Columbia since 1913, with a B rating from Niche. The school is highly regarded for its arts programs. Students can join the steel drum band or take art classes and see their work displayed at school and around the community. They’ll later filter into St. Andrews Middle School and Columbia High School, each with a C-minus from Niche. The high school offers a national defense magnet program known as BLAST, in which students can select from four focuses: pre-engineering, bio-medical, cyber security, and aerospace.
Within walking distance of vibrant downtown district

The thoroughfare eventually leads to the South Carolina State House. Locals have access to medical care at Prisma Health Richland Hospital, less than 2 miles away. To take a trip outside the city, head to Columbia Metropolitan Airport by taking South Carolina Highway 602, nearly 9.5 miles southwest of Earlewood.
