A neighborhood with a strong sense of pride and a richly rooted past dating back to World War II, Greenview was a planned community for Black veterans returning from battle. As part of the G.I. Bill, it was designed to help them and their families rebuild after the war. While the area was annexed into Columbia nearly half a century later, several community organizations continue to preserve and celebrate the history near and dear to those who have called Greenview home. Through the efforts of Greenview's residents, the neighborhood routinely gets cleaned, flowers and trees are planted and fundraisers that go back to community needs are held.

Suburban Neighborhood in Columbia, South Carolina

Homes
Ranch homes, split levels and bungalows outline Greenview's narrow roads. Most homes date back to the 1950s and '60s and don't span a wide price range, typically falling between $120,000 and $180,000. Lot sizes are larger here, some above a quarter-acre, providing yard space in the front and back of homes made more appealing by planting mature trees and shrubbery. Many are lined with wrought iron or chain link fencing and have small, paved driveways for ample off-street parking. One of the neighborhood's more distinctive and frequent features is the brick mailboxes perched at the edge of the roadways. "The residents here have seen homes passed down through several generations," says Oscar Walker, Sales Manager at South Carolina Real Estate Exchange. "The neighborhood associations are also very active and are conscious of keeping the neighborhood in good shape." Among those associations is the Greenview Reunion Foundation, which hosts clean-up days and highlights the work of neighborhood residents.

Transportation
Greenview is bordered by major thoroughfares, such as US Highway 21 and Interstate 20, providing direct routes to major areas of Columbia. Downtown Columbia is 7 miles south of the neighborhood, and the Columbia Metropolitan Airport is 17 miles south, a drive of between 20 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic. Bus stops are divided along main roads in the area, such as Farrow Road and North Main Street, and they branch to several different points in the city.
Schools
Schools are served by Richland School District No. 1, and Lewis Greenview Elementary, which receives a C-minus on Niche, sits in the heart of the neighborhood. Students move on to Sanders Middle, which has a C-plus rating and offers a career exploration and leadership magnet program. Students who complete that program will automatically be enrolled in the W.J. Keenan High School career preparation program. There are four academies: engineering, hospitality and tourism, government and entrepreneurship. Keenan High has an overall C-plus but an A for its diverse, long roster of clubs and activities.
Shopping and Dining
Northside Plaza off North Main Street is an easy stop for groceries and other essentials. The small shopping center houses a few fast-food chains like Domino's and Subway and several stores, including the Abney Seafood Market, Dollar Tree and Piggly Wiggly. Local businesses can be found peppered throughout the neighborhood, from long-time established mechanics to beauty supply stores. Indulge NPTS is a go-to for Southern staples such as fried catfish and greens.
Parks
In 2016, Greenview Park received a boost through the development and opening of a water park with several pools, winding tube slides, and water-filled fun play spaces for kids. The water park draws thousands of visitors to Greenview Park every summer. Year-round, the rest of the expansive park never sees an empty area. "You have people from outside of the community coming to use it – you've got nine tennis courts, walking trails, sports fields, playgrounds," says James McKinney, a Senior Park Leader for Greenview. "This park caters to the needs of everyone, from 5 years old to 90. We have fun here, and that's what it's about. They say one city, one Columbia starts at the parks."
