Convenient location to suburban amenities near Jones McDonald

Magnet schools with ample career-focused programs, coupled with some of the lowest home prices in the area, are just a few reasons buyers are attracted to the Jones McDonald community. “People also love the convenience of downtown Columbia,” says Casey Estridge, general manager of APM Realty Group. “You’re within a 10-minute drive of all the shopping, dining and entertainment the city offers.” While the rest of Columbia has a growing selection of new housing, Jones McDonald seems to be at a standstill. Not many established properties become available throughout the year. However, there’s a fair amount of new construction in and around the neighborhood. “There was an explosion of new homes a few years back,” says Rachel Shealy, a Realtor at 803 Realty. “It was such an issue that the city placed a moratorium on building new homes, but that was recently lifted.”

Jones McDonald has a scarce inventory of Homes

An area ripe for investors and first-time buyers, Jones McDonald is chock full of established 1950s and ‘60s ranch homes and bungalows, with narrowly paved walkways leading to the entryways. Prices can fall between $100,000 and $150,000, which is a bit lower when compared to more desirable and historic neighborhoods like Shandon. Affordability plays a key factor in the recent inventory boom in Jones McDonald. “There was an explosion of new homes a few years back,” Shealey adds. “It was such an issue that the city placed a moratorium on building new homes, but that was recently lifted.” Owners often make modern interior or exterior upgrades, which can exceed $150,000. Yards are typically much smaller in this area, sitting around a quarter-acre or less. What little green space homeowners do have is enveloped by mature trees and pruned shrubbery. Paved driveways and one-car garages provide off-street parking options, but the roads are wide enough for drivers to park along the curb. A little over half of the residents are renters who occupy some properties instead of apartments and condos.

TS Martin Park and the Broad river

One of Columbia’s most recently revitalized parks, TS Martin Park, provides an after-school hangout spot. Unused tennis courts have been converted into a unique playground with rope climbers and a bamboo jungle. The city also built an eccentric basketball goal with multiple hoops branching out from one center, so it is common to spot several games being played at once. Walking trails weave throughout the entire park, offering a place for residents to stretch their legs. The Broad River is a popular spot near the University of South Carolina for kayaking and floating on innertubes, as Riverfront Park North has multiple drop-off points. Nearby bodies of water include Forest Lake and Lake Katherine, both 6 miles away.

Segra Park and Soda City isn't far from Jones McDonald

At the center of all the action is the baseball stadium, Segra Park, home to the Columbia Fireflies. On the weekends, the stands flood with fans from across the city to catch a minor league game, followed by fireworks. “Soda City is another huge event here,” Shealey adds. “It’s every Saturday, and it’s super dog-friendly. They shut down Main Street and line it with local vendors.” According to Shealey, the University of South Carolina football games are a huge deal, and fans often fill the Williams-Brice Stadium, even though the stadium was built to hold over 50,000 people.

Getting in and around Jones McDonald

“You might have to drive a little farther out,” Shealey adds. “Plus, there can be a lot of traffic on North Main Street or any major roadway because the infrastructure here can’t really support our growth right now.” Another highly trafficked interstate is US-277. For immediate medical needs, Richland Memorial Hospital is roughly 2 miles away. Columbia Metropolitan Airport is about 14 miles away.

Options sit along Two Notch Road and North Main Street

Whether it’s groceries, restaurants or specialty supply shops, it all can be found along Two Notch Road. Regulars have kept coming back to Anthony’s Dairy Bar since the 1980s for diner classics like charbroiled burgers, hot dogs and deep-fried chicken wing baskets. A small shopping complex with a Food Lion sits less than two miles north of the neighborhood when you need to shop for groceries. North Main Street isn’t far and also hosts an array of retail and eateries. Popular options include Peak Drift Brewery. The facility that used to house a manufacturing company spans nearly 65,000 square feet. A mile up North Main Street is another local favorite, Zesto. This old-school diner is known for chocolate-dipped ice cream and burgers. Locals can also sit down for a meal on the pet-friendly outdoor patio at Publico Kitchen and Tap. North Main Street is also home to a Piggly Wiggly, making it convenient to grab any last-minute groceries.
