Old-fashioned Southern charm near downtown Columbia
Not to be confused with the tony seaside community in New York, The Hamptons in South Carolina built a reputation of its own. “The Hamptons has developed nicely in the last 20, 25, maybe 30 years,” says Earl Pierce, a sales agent with Coldwell Banker Realty who has over four decades of real estate experience. Made up of several subdivisions, the inland community is in demand for its variety of homes in turnkey condition, plus its proximity to downtown Columbia and Fort Jackson. “It’s very family-oriented, very old-fashioned,” says Janice Dinkel, an agent with Coldwell Banker Realty who has sold dozens of homes in the area. “People are neighborly. They do things together.”

Stately colonials and ranch homes
The Hamptons’ residential blocks feature everything from 1960s ranch-style homes to stately, multi-story traditional homes with Greek and Colonial Revival influences. Several of these larger, more stately homes include features such as brick stairways leading up to the entrances, spacious and well-manicured front yards and full-height porches covered with gabled roofs held up by multiple tall columns. The modest, decades-old brick ranch styles common in this part of the state are also available in some subdivisions. This area— similar to neighboring Lake Katherine — has developed much over the years and features a handful of subdivisions. The average price for homes here hovers around $200,000 and $450,000, but some sell for over $1 million. Those, however, are not considered the norm and are several thousand-square-foot houses located on big tracts of land. Demand, which affects those prices, has been high in the Hamptons.

Shop at Whole Foods, then dine at Midwood
The Hamptons community exits to Garners Ferry Road, one of the major thoroughfares for southern Columbia. Landmark Square shopping center has retail options and the Shoppes at Woodhill, with a Target and casual dining. About a mile up Garners Ferry Road is the Cross Hill Market shopping center, where residents can get groceries from Whole Foods. Midwood Smokehouse is a regional chain that serves southern barbecue. Columbia’s Five Points district, about 4 miles away, is lined with restaurants, local boutiques, shops and a lively nightlife.

Easy traveling to downtown Columbia
Being about 5 miles from downtown, Hamptons residents can enjoy Columbia’s artistic scene and multiple venues. Interstate 77 connects The Hamptons to other parts of the Columbia metro area. I-77 also leads to Fort Jackson, about 5 miles away. Veterans in need of medical care are within 2 miles of the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Columbia Metropolitan Airport, which flies commercial service around the country, is about 15 miles away using I-77.
Tee time at Fort Jackson Golf Club
Woodlands Park is, as the name suggests, shaded by a forested landscape with rows of mature trees. The park has a playground and plenty of green space between the trees. Members of the armed forces can book a tee time at the Fort Jackson Golf Club, which is home to an 18-hole course. A few miles away, Southeast Park has a scenic lake and nature trails, plus an 18-hole disc golf course that winds through forested terrain with elevation changes.

Dreher High School, rated A-minus, is one of the oldest public high schools in the state. Private school options are also close by, including the Hammond School for kindergarten through 12th grade.
