MidTown suburb supported by local community organizations
A midcentury suburb on the edge of MidTown, East Carver Heights is quietly coming back into its own. The community is located next to historic Carver Heights, Columbus's first Black subdivision. Developed in the 1960s and 1970s, East Carver Heights offered more room for Black middle-class residents to expand. Today, organizations like East Carver Heights Community Development Corporation support and rejuvenate residents of the community. "There's a lot of pride and care here," says Lisa Herring, who, along with her husband, Greg Herring, started the organization with the help of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. "We're trying to empower residents through our programs. We have the Boxwood FANN, where we've developed close relationships. It's not a food bank – we hire from the community, and they get to decide what we're buying and help bring it in. We also have Path to Shine, which pairs students with mentors that support them throughout the entire school year. We have such a great community and great families that care."
