Growing MidTown community close to Lakebottom Park
If there's a word to define East Highlands, it would be "growth," says Realtor Alison Cox with Keller Williams Realty. Cox has nearly 20 years of experience living and working in the area. This diverse community has been an anchor neighborhood in Columbus since the turn of the 20th century. After socio-economic setbacks throughout the late 20th century and early 21st century, residents are now encouraging the community's growth. Great organizations are working in Columbus, like Truth Spring Inc., in North Highland and Take the City’s Project Lifehouse in East Highlands, Cox says. “They’ve been going into the neighborhoods and starting trade schools and food drives to support residents.” The community is also known for being a friendly, welcoming area that's a popular choice for military families. "Everyone is super kind here," says Taylor Kiel, who works at Park Place Interiors in the Saint Elmo Shopping Center. "My fiancé and I chose to live on this side of MidTown because the area is just so convenient. It's an easy drive to Fort Benning for my fiancé, and shops and restaurants are close. There's also the convenience of Lakebottom Park; they have a lot of events for the community." With East Highlands' growth and community-centric vibe, it's a good choice for those who want to live in MidTown.

20th-century housing styles with budget-friendly prices
East Highlands’ history is seen in its diverse architecture. The neighborhood was one of the first developers laid out when they built Lakebottom Park, which is a couple of blocks east. Lots tended to sell slowly here, resulting in a display of early and midcentury architecture. There's a mix of Craftsman-style homes and brick bungalows toward the east and ornate Victorian-inspired homes, Cape Cods and Tudor-inspired homes toward the west and south. The neighborhood's northern end has Shingle-style cottages and shotgun houses built for workers of the Columbus Railroad Company. Prices in East Highlands typically range between $100,000 and $250,000, with renovated Craftsman-style or Tudor-inspired homes on the higher end of the range. "East Highlands has been slower to develop, so homes here are really budget-friendly compared to other areas of MidTown," says David Hickox, a Keller Williams Realtor with nearly a decade of experience. There are carefully maintained or restored options on the market, but some homes may need renovations. "This is a historical home area," Alison Cox says. "You can really see the beauty in the construction of these midcentury homes, but some just need fresh energy and upkeep to help this area shine."
