East Columbus offers a convenient location and affordable home prices
East Columbus is a suburban enclave near shopping, parks and some of Columbus ’ biggest employers. Columbus State University is located here, and Fort Benning is within a 15-minute drive. The tree-filled subdivisions here offer a variety of housing styles, from midcentury ranch-styles to new construction, often at prices lower than the rest of the city. Grocery stores and restaurants are available throughout the neighborhood, and popular parks are also nearby. Interstate 185 borders the neighborhood, making it easy to get around the rest of the city.
How much you can expect to pay for a home in East Columbus
The median home sale price is in the mid-$100,000s, lower than Columbus’ overall median but higher than the nearby communities of South Columbus and East Carver Heights. Fixer-uppers generally range from around $10,000 to the lower $100,000s. Move-in ready homes include midcentury ranch-style houses, New Traditional homes built from the 1990s to the 2020s, and new construction. East Columbus attracts a variety of homebuyers. “People like to come here to retire because it’s very laid back and has a very family-friendly community feel,” says Jennifer Murphy, a Realtor with 1st Class Real Estate Excellence who’s sold homes in the area for seven years. “When you go to the grocery store, you’ll run into somebody you know.” With a median lot size of around a quarter of an acre, many come here looking for a peaceful retreat with a little extra space. “We get a lot of folks from Texas and California, and it’s a shock to them to see how much greenery there is,” says John Daniel II, an associate broker with Broadmoor Realty who’s worked in real estate since 1992. “You can grow just about anything here.”
The highly rated Muscogee County Schools district serves the area
Kids can attend Muscogee County Schools, a district that gets high ratings. Enrollment is address-based, and you can also apply to themed magnet schools and magnet programs. East Columbus is home to the East Columbus Magnet Academy, which has a gifted and talented program, and Kendrick High School, home to the Academy of Communication Arts and Design. St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School is a highly rated private school nearby. Columbus State University is also in the neighborhood, offering over 90 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Close to grocery stores, restaurants and Peachtree Mall
There are several grocery stores throughout the neighborhood, including Piggly Wiggly, Publix and Food Depot. You can find fast-food restaurants and national chains along Buena Vista Road and Milgen Road. There are also a few locally owned spots in and near the neighborhood, including:

Commute downtown or to Fort Benning in 15 minutes
Uptown and Downtown Columbus are a roughly 15-minute drive away. Interstate 185 borders the neighborhood’s west side and is the main route to Fort Benning, which is also around 15 minutes away. “The roads aren’t congested, so you’ll be able to get where you’re going very easily,” Murphy says. The METRA Transit System bus stops throughout the community, providing an alternative to driving.
