Why Downtown Columbus may be a good place to live
Historic Downtown Columbus, Georgia, features a collection of colorful, centuries-old homes. The community, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, has preserved homes that offer a look into Columbus's past. Downtown Columbus shares the city's lower cost of living and more budget-friendly housing prices compared to other communities in Georgia, such as Atlanta. You're within walking distance of vibrant Uptown, offering access to dining, retail and community-led events. The scenic Chattahoochee River is nearby, and major thoroughfares, such as Veterans Parkway, provide access to major employers and amenities.

Colorful historic homes for sale in Downtown Columbus
In the community, well-kept, ornate homes stand out under canopies of mature oak trees. Many of these historic homes from the 19th and 20th centuries were once owned by famous residents, including Coca-Cola inventor John Pemberton and blues legend Ma Rainey. "There's one of the largest collections of historic homes in this area," says Realtor Alison Cox with Keller Williams Realty River Cities. Cox has nearly 20 years of experience living and working in and around Columbus. "And it's nice because these restored homes are full of character and close to Uptown and the river." Closer to Broadway are richly ornamented Victorian, Queen Anne and Neoclassical homes. As the neighborhood extends from Broadway, there are Colonial Revival-style homes, Craftsman-inspired bungalows and shingle-style and shotgun cottages. Most houses on the market feature renovated interiors and well-preserved exteriors in eye-catching colors. Prices for smaller bungalows and cottages range between the upper $100,000s and lower $400,000s, while larger Queen Anne or Victorian-style homes run between the lower 500,000s and upper $900,000s.

The area features several restaurants and community spaces. Heritage Art Center on Sixth Street is a community-based art gallery that showcases art from local artists and students. Minnie's Uptown is a lunch-only cafeteria offering Southern specialties, while the multi-use Goetchius House is a go-to spot for brunch. Realtor Mia Mannswith Coldwell Banker and Kennon, Parker, Duncan & Davis notes the Coca-Cola Space Science Center as a favorite.
Manns also highlights the abundant activities and events available in neighboring Uptown. "There's so much to do, you just have to get involved," she says. "There are candlelight concerts, Riverfest, Market Days on Broadway, Toast of the Town and the Food Truck Festival. The city closes down the bridge, and trucks line Woodruff Park." Residents are just a short walk to Uptown, making it easy to enjoy restaurants, boutiques, breweries, bars and coffee shops.
Music is an integral part of Columbus's history, which you can see at the museum that occupies the former home of singer Ma Rainey. "It’s such a rich area for music, the history of blues, R& B and country in Columbus is hugely influential," says local musician Tim O'Brien, resident and owner of American Car Boutique in neighboring Phenix City. "And the music scene here took a dive during the pandemic but is steadily coming back." Residents can also catch a concert, play or musical at multiple venues across town, including:
The Springer Opera House
RiverCenter for the Performing Arts
Phenix City Amphitheater
Bars and clubs around Uptown, like The Loft
