Northern Columbus offers family friendly charm and convenience

A vast area just above the Northern Highlands, Northern Columbus is well-known for its access to shopping, highly ranked schools and public green spaces. “It’s an upscale, family friendly suburb that brings a lot of people in,” says David Hickox, an agent with Keller Williams. “A lot of buyers are military officers and professionals with families.” A wide selection of homes from the midcentury onward offers a variety of price points, and easy access to interstates and the airport is a benefit for commuters.

Home prices range widely based on style and location

Southern neighborhoods like Windsor Park and Nankipooh have neatly divided quarter-acre lots with mature trees that line roads and fill backyards. Single-car driveways lead to carports and attached garages, reducing the need for street parking. Midcentury homes are the majority here, with ranch-style, split-level and Cape Cod homes selling for between $90,000 and $340,000, depending on size and condition. Houses get newer further north, and styles like Contemporary Craftsman and Colonial Revival are popular in areas like Fortson. Residential streets here are more stretched out, with larger lots and denser vegetation, providing more privacy between properties. Homes here generally sell for between $330,000 and $720,000, depending on size, location and amenities.

Chain restaurants dominate, but fine dining is available

The majority of the area’s shopping and entertainment centers around the convergence of Interstate 185 and U.S. Route 27, including Target, Old Navy and the AMC Ritz 13 movie theater. The Peachtree Mall is just south of Windsor Park and the Columbus Airport, Publix and Winn-Dixie are nearby. Hickox says that familiar franchises make up the lion’s share of restaurants. “You have Chili’s, Red Robin, Outback – all your chains,” he says. “But there are some local fine dining establishments, too.” Charred Oak puts an upscale spin on Southern classics, with a menu that includes shrimp and grits, Cajun fried green tomatoes and fruit cobbler. In addition to its menu of haute cuisine, Morten’s at Old Town features a list of creative, handcrafted cocktails like the Lavender Lemondrop and the Peter Piper’s Pour. “When it comes to higher-end restaurants, if they’re not in Uptown Columbus, they’re in Northern Columbus,” says Gerald Saunders, an agent with Set Fee Realty.

Bus stops and interstates make commuting convenient

The nearest highways are Interstate 85 and U.S. Route 80, the latter of which leads to Downtown Columbus, some 9 miles south. "Honestly, wherever you are in Columbus, it only takes 15 minutes to get anywhere," says Saunders. The Columbus Airport offers semi-regular flights to Atlanta through Delta Airlines. The Columbus Metropolitan Transit System offers public buses throughout the city, with stops on Hamilton Road and Veterans Parkway.

April arts festival spans museums, theaters and galleries

ARTSFEST is a month-long celebration of the arts. Celebrated in April, the festivities span the entire city, encompassing art galleries, theaters and museums.
