Abbie Trails, located southeast of Columbus, provides a suburban refuge for its residents, who enjoy some of the metropolitan area's best amenities. Commuters have easy access to the downtown area on weekdays, and when they want to unwind each weekend, the nature preserve is one of Ohio's most popular birdwatching destinations. "One of the reasons I bought my house is that it backs up to Pickerington Ponds Metro Park," says Elizabeth Allen, a Realtor who sells homes in the neighborhood with USA-1 Real Estate. Allen also lives in Abbie Trails. "We have an entrance at the back of the Longwood subdivision where we can bicycle ride or hike. That's a nice plus." The area also has moderately rated public schools.

An expansive nature preserve
Pickerington Ponds Metro Park is a state nature preserve, a prime spot for birdwatching. The park has six trails and five overlooks to observe birds and other wildlife. Signs along the trails tell visitors which species to look for. "It's not a place that's going to have playground sets for the kids, but there are shelter houses for picnicking," Allen says. The National Audubon Society has named the metro park an Important Bird Area, meaning it's vital to conserving bird populations. It has over 260 avian species. Bald eagles have constructed nests high in the trees along Kildeer Trail. Nests have also been found at Ellis Pond. Residents take hikes along the 16-mile Blacklick Creek Trail. The trail passes through Portman Park, which runs on either side of the creek. The park has an open-air shelter, a playground and athletic fields. Folks exercise at the Jerry L. Garver YMCA on the northern end of the community.

Single-family homes from the early 2000s

Most of the homes were developed in the early 2000s. The single-family residences are concentrated south of Blacklick Creek. Vinyl-sided ranch-style houses sell for between $270,000 and $285,000.
