Pickerington Ponds Metro Park is a state nature preserve, a prime spot for birdwatching. The park has six trails and five overlooks to observe birds and other wildlife. Signs along the trails tell visitors which species to look for. "It's not a place that's going to have playground sets for the kids, but there are shelter houses for picnicking," Allen says. The National Audubon Society has named the metro park an Important Bird Area, meaning it's vital to conserving bird populations. It has over 260 avian species. Bald eagles have constructed nests high in the trees along Kildeer Trail. Nests have also been found at Ellis Pond. Residents take hikes along the 16-mile Blacklick Creek Trail. The trail passes through Portman Park, which runs on either side of the creek. The park has an open-air shelter, a playground and athletic fields. Folks exercise at the Jerry L. Garver YMCA on the northern end of the community.Moderately rated public schools
Children often begin their educations at the B Niche-rated Pickerington Elementary. Diley Middle School has a B-plus Niche rating. Teens usually move on to Pickerington High School Central, which has an A-minus Niche rating and a 20-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Ohio Stadium is 19 miles northwest via Interstate 70. Nearly 100,000 people pack into the stadium on gamedays to watch the Buckeyes take on other Big Ten Conference rival teams. Folks catch new film releases at the Marcus Cinema. Just off Interstate 70, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum attracts chopper enthusiasts from all over the country. The downtown has attractions like the Columbus Museum of Art and Nationwide Arena, which features performances by world-famous musicians like Justin Timberlake and Jelly Roll.Getting around Columbus
Downtown Columbus is 14 miles northwest via Interstate 70. The Central Ohio Transit Authority operates bus stops on Gender Road. When locals need to go on a big trip, they travel 12 miles southwest via Ohio State Route 317 to Rickenbacker International Airport.Local restaurants and a nearby Kroger
Residents enjoy enchiladas and margaritas at La Matraca Mexican Grill on Gender Road. Val's of the Caribbean on Refugee Road serves authentic island cuisine, such as jerk chicken and curry goat. Down the street, China House offers dishes like chow mein and kung po shrimp. North of the creek, Gender Road Town Centre includes restaurants like Wendy's and Donatos Pizza. The shopping center also has a Kroger and a CVS.
