The Arena District is the heart of Columbus’ entertainment scene

The Arena District is a lively neighborhood in downtown Columbus that is home to some of the city’s most popular venues, including Nationwide Arena. While concerts and games draw thousands of visitors, residents come to the area for its walkability and location near some of the city’s largest employers. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, and the bustling North Bank Park is minutes away. The neighborhood is part of the Five on High, Columbus’ entertainment districts, which also includes the Short North Arts District, the University District, the Brewery District and German Village.

Homeowners and renters can find plenty of condos downtown

Housing in the Arena District is exclusively condos and apartments. You can find a mix of modern complexes and early-1900s factory buildings. “Most of the condos have parking,” says Realtor Brandon Prewitt with Re/Max Metro Plus, who has over 20 years of experience in the city. Other common amenities include fitness centers and on-site maintenance. One- to two-bedroom units can cost between the mid-$100,000s and the mid-$400,000s. Over 75% of the residents are renters.

Nationwide Arena and other venues host concerts and athletic events

The aptly named Arena District is home to Columbus’ largest athletic, music and event venues, including:

  • Nationwide Arena, a concert venue and home of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets
  • ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, where the Columbus Crew soccer club plays
  • KEMBA Live!, a concert venue that’s hosted famous acts like Fiona Apple
  • Huntington Park, which hosts the Minor League Baseball team, the Columbus Clippers
  • Greater Columbus Convention Center, where events range from professional conferences to GalaxyCon Columbus
Because of these attractions, thousands of visitors come to the area. “It’s pretty lively,” Prewitt says. “I think that, if you’re moving there, you understand that during games and activities, it’s going to be a higher number of people.”

You can walk to work, but need a vehicle to run errands

Living in the Arena District means you can get to work, restaurants and events on foot. Even though the neighborhood is very walkable, Prewitt says, “You still need a car to get to grocery stores and all those places.” Big-box stores and groceries are about 2 miles, or 10 minutes, away in the University District. Public transportation is also available, with the Central Ohio Transit Authority offering bus stops throughout downtown.

Most parking is available in garages and public lots. “Parking is typically a hot commodity in that community, and they charge a premium for it,” Prewitt says. “If you don’t have a parking space, you can attempt to buy one or lease one.”

With corporate offices and major employers nearby, The Arena District draws a steady flow of business professionals.

North Bank Park offers outdoor recreation and city events

The nearby North Bank Park offers some fresh air in the heart of downtown, with picnic tables, paved walking paths and views of the Scioto River. It is part of the Scioto Mile, which starts at Bicentennial Plaza and hosts some of the city’s most popular events. Columbus celebrates Independence Day with Red, White & BOOM!, a street festival that ends with a fireworks show. At Jazz & Rib Fest, you can enjoy live music and barbecue from nearly 20 vendors. “The view is really awesome because it borders the river, and I think that’s why the city does a lot of stuff there,” Prewitt says. McFerson Commons Park is a nearby green space, popular for the landmark Union Station Arch at its entrance.
