Where Columbus’ beer manufacturing history began
Hops, foam and a statue of the “Drunken King” mark the presence of the Brewery District, where Central Ohio’s beer manufacturing history originated. With the pristine water of the Scioto River nearby, 19th-century German brewers found the neighborhood an ideal place to set up shop. As the industry flourished, homes for workers sprung up near the riverfront. While the last breweries closed in the mid-20th century, many historic buildings, landmarks and houses from the era have been preserved. The former industrial district has been renewed with mixed-use development, popular restaurants and nightlife.

Eateries overseen by the King of Beer
A statue of Gambrinus, a European cultural icon and the fictitious King of Beer, stands in a small park at the center of the district; a popular tourist attraction and local icon, he oversees the neighborhood’s activities. South High Street is where locals merry-make, as most of the neighborhood’s venues are along it. Mornings are brighter with an espresso from Emmett’s Café and a sweet treat from Kolache Republic — a bakery specializing in Czech pastries. Local Catina brims with energy on Taco Tuesdays, and Antiques on High offers diners flights of craft beers and sours. Homecooked meals are a breeze with Kroger right inside the neighborhood. For theatre, comedy and rock music, Shadowbox Live! is the area’s legacy playhouse. Set inside the historic Worly Building, it is the country’s largest resident theater company. Most of these establishments have stood the test of time, but Realtor John Kohlhepp of Keller Williams Capital Partners Realty shares that the commercial district does see a lot of turnover. Having sold all over Columbus, he’s seen places come and go but shares, “There is one spot called Germania. That place will never close. It’s like a private club, and I’m a member there. It’s a lot of fun!” This private society seeks to preserve German culture through singing and sports and is the home of Columbus’ original Oktoberfest.

Taking in the river at Scioto Audubon Metro Park
The Scioto Audubon Metro Park has transformed this former industrial area into a lush wildlife sanctuary on the banks of the Scioto. The 120-acre park has a boat ramp, nature centers, a dog park and three rock climbing walls. It also offers access to the Lower Scioto Greenway, a 10-mile pathway where locals can walk or ride bikes along the riverfront and take in panoramic views of the city skyline. If visitors don’t have their own bikes, they can pick one up at the park’s CoGo Bike Share stop. The park also houses The Grange Insurance Audubon Center, which increases environmental awareness through education. It features native plant gardens, protected habitats and an outdoor observation deck.

Brewing facilities turned into condominiums
The original homes in the area, many of which still stand today, were built in the working-class German style of the time with tall rectangular windows and stone lintels. Later, Italianate homes with arched windows and doors and hood moldings were constructed in the area. Most have been converted into condos, along with many historic buildings. Kohlhepp says, “There’s a couple of condo buildings that are legitimately refurbished Hoster brewing facilities; that’s why it’s called Brewery District.” More recently, contemporary-looking multi-stories have made an appearance in the neighborhood. Most condos sell between $300,000 and $675,000, although one-bedroom options can list in the $200,000s. Newer construction typically costs between $680,000 and $800,000.
