When Interstate 670 was completed in the late 1990s, its pathway created a triangle-shaped area of homes and businesses. While the neighborhood dates back long before the interstate was even a thought, the area, which used to be known by another name, was changed to Devon Triangle. Part of Devon Triangle is still an industrial area. The neighborhood’s origin dates back over 100 years, when the railroad brought goods to those businesses, and homes were constructed so people could live near where they worked.
When you go west of Joyce Avenue, it’s still an industrial area, one of the largest being the G & J Pepsi Bottling Company on Gibbard Avenue. This facility employs over 1500 people working to produce, bottle, sell, distribute and market Pepsi products. Carr Supply of Columbus on Old Leonard Avenue is an HVAC parts supplier and plumbing fixture showroom. Their Facebook page says they have one of Columbus's largest plumbing supply stores. The company has been around since 1917 and employs over 100 people.
Many homes date back to 1900
Because some homes are so old, the City of Columbus started a program focusing on tearing down old houses and building newer ones. That’s evident when you drive down Gibbard Avenue and see a two-story traditional home built in 2005 that keeps some old characteristics. That’s next door to a house that has been there since 1900. There are original homes that date back to 1900 on 4th Avenue. Because some of the older homes haven’t been renovated, the prices of homes vary. The range is from under $100,000 to about $250,000. The space inside the homes ranges from 700 to nearly 2000 square feet. There are one and two-story traditional homes in Devon Triangle as well as Craftsman.
Champion Middle School offers a focus on healthy eating
Devon Triangle is zoned for Columbus City Schools. Trevitt Elementary School serves pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and has about 200 students. Niche says the student-to-teacher ratio is 15-to-1, just below the national average. Champion Middle School is designated a Health Science Academy, meaning it monthly focuses on health information and practices. In one month, students concentrate on healthy eating. East High School has a student-to-teacher ratio of 14-to-1.
Saunders Park has a community pool and green space
A park with a public pool is on the other side of Interstate 670. The Maryland Swimming Pool is part of Saunders Park on Atcheson St. The pool at the southern end of the 14-acre facility has diving boards and slides and two shelters for gatherings. The rest of the park is mainly green space, ideal for soccer or playing catch. Belcher is trying to get a park in the Devon Triangle neighborhood. “Right now, there’s green space at the corner of Gibbard and Mansfield. I’m petitioning to try to have that turn into a recreation area for the kids,” he says. The effort is very much in the early stages.
Downtown can be reached in 20 minutes or less
William Belcher II grew up in Devon Triangle and has spent most of his life there. “Geographically speaking, I feel it’s ideally located because there’s not a spot you can’t get to in the city in less than 20 minutes. You have access to Interstate 670 and 71 within only a few minutes to get wherever you need to go,” he says. Belcher grew up on Gibbard Avenue. “To me, it’s a comforting place to be. Everybody on my street knows each other. Generally, it’s a close-knit community.”
